The call

Lithic has real bank-charter protection but no new funding since 2021, a flat customer count, and Stripe circling the same customers with more money.

Lithic helps companies issue payment cards and process transactions by providing the technical backbone that connects to banks and payment networks. The company has some real advantages: it owns its own bank and has direct connections to the Federal Reserve, which competitors cannot easily copy. However, Lithic faces serious problems. It has not raised new money since mid-2021, and its value on the secondary market has dropped roughly 85 percent, which signals the company may need emergency funding or a restructuring. At the same time, stronger competitors like Stripe Issuing and Marqeta have more cash, better relationships with customers, and are moving faster. The one thing that could turn this around is a successful new financing round at a reasonable price, but given the long silence and the steep valuation drop, investors should watch carefully for what happens in the next six to twelve months when the company likely needs to raise capital again.

Why
01
AI pressure: Visa Trusted Agent Protocol / MCP Server. Visa is building agent-to-issuer standards at the network layer, pushing intelligence up-stack so Lithic just executes what Visa defines. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Stripe Issuing. Stripe has more distribution, more capital, and bundles issuing with its existing payments customers, squeezing Lithic's pitch to new signups. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Lithic owns its own bank charter and BIN through Lithic Bank, giving it direct Fed access that pure API resellers cannot copy overnight.
What would change this call
Lithic announces a primary funding round within 6-12 months. Would show whether investors still value it near 2021 levels or in a down-round.
Lithic's stated customer count rises above '100+' in company materials. Would show renewed customer growth versus multi-year stagnation.
Visa or Mastercard ships direct-to-developer card issuing tools. Would show the networks bypassing issuer-processors like Lithic.

Questions people ask
Is Lithic profitable in 2026?
Lithic does not publicly disclose revenue or profitability figures as of July 2026. It reports volume proxies instead, such as $1 billion in monthly total processing volume reached in November 2024, but no audited income statement is public.
Has Lithic raised new funding recently?
No. Lithic's last primary round was a $60 million Series C led by Stripes, closed July 28, 2021, valuing it at roughly $800 million. As of mid-2026, no new primary round has been publicly reported, a gap of over four years.
Is Lithic's valuation down in 2026?
Secondary-market trackers suggest so. TrueUp estimated a secondary valuation of about $100 million as of July 1, 2026, down 88% from the 2021 peak, while Notice.co put implied market cap at $131 million as of July 14, 2026, down 84%. Both are secondary estimates, not confirmed primary rounds.
Who is Lithic's biggest competitor?
Lithic competes with Stripe Issuing, Marqeta (public, NASDAQ: MQ), Galileo (owned by SoFi), and Highnote in card-issuing infrastructure. Highnote and Stripe Issuing were actively running head-to-head comparison marketing against Lithic as of a June 23, 2026 buyer's guide.
Could AI replace Lithic's card issuing business?
Not the core regulated function. Lithic Bank holds its own BIN sponsorship and has direct Federal Reserve ACH access, both hard-to-replicate regulatory assets. But developer-experience differentiation is eroding as AI coding tools commoditize API integration work, per 2026 analysis.
How many customers does Lithic have?
Lithic told a California regulator in 2023 it enabled more than 100 companies to use payment cards, and its own 2025-2026 marketing still describes '100+ innovative clients,' suggesting the disclosed customer count has not grown in that stated range for roughly three years.
