The call

M1 remains a working, regulated broker with growing assets, but its distinguishing features are now standard at bigger firms with more capital and no fresh funding to answer that.

M1 lets people invest with automatic rebalancing and combines it with banking and lending services. Big competitors like Schwab and Fidelity can add the same features because there is nothing M1 does that they cannot build themselves, and they already have customers' trust and more money. M1's growth has stalled for two years, it stopped hiring, and similar fintech companies are struggling with investors, which means people are doubting whether this type of business works as well as promised. The one thing that could turn this around is if M1 can prove it is adding lots of new customers again and growing the money it manages, instead of just keeping the customers it already has.

Why
01
AI pressure: BlackRock Aladdin, BofA Erica, and AI-driven robo-advisory tools from major brokers. AI portfolio tools are spreading inside big banks and brokers, narrowing the gap with M1's automated rebalancing pitch. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, E*TRADE (Morgan Stanley). These firms already run automated rebalancing and cash management products, matching M1's core features at greater scale and trust. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Regulatory licensing and an existing base of 1M+ funded accounts with $12B+ in assets give M1 real switching friction.
What would change this call
Schwab or Fidelity ships a Pie-style automated rebalancing or theme-investing tool. Would show incumbents closing M1's product gap and eroding its differentiation.
M1 completes a priced funding round, secondary sale, or IPO filing. Would reveal whether M1's $1.45B valuation still holds or has been marked down.
M1's self-directed user count rises above the roughly 1M level reported for two years. Would show renewed customer acquisition instead of stalled growth.

Has M1 Finance raised new funding recently?
No priced round has been announced since the $150M Series E on July 14, 2021, led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, which valued M1 at $1.45 billion. As of mid-2026, that valuation is five years old and unconfirmed at any new mark.
