The call

MarkAny's government footprint holds steady while its newer AI watermarking products compete against both free platform tools and a more aggressive domestic rival.

MarkAny sells software that protects documents and detects fake images, mainly to Korean government agencies like the tax service and courts. The company is hard to replace there because those agencies trust it and foreign companies have trouble getting into South Korean government contracts, but that only protects the old business. The real problem is newer products like watermarking for AI-generated images are exactly what Google, Meta, and local rival Fasoo are now offering for free or as add-ons to their own services. What matters next is whether MarkAny can actually sell these new products to real companies as separate paid services in the next year, or if it just becomes a shrinking defender of its legacy government relationships.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google DeepMind SynthID and Meta Stable Signature. Free watermarking bundled into AI platforms competes directly with MarkAny's paid SaForus SaaS tool. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Fasoo. Fasoo sells competing DRM and enterprise security products in the same Korean accounts MarkAny depends on. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Long-standing government contracts (National Tax Service, Supreme Court) tied to procurement rules and data sovereignty that foreign vendors struggle to clear.
What would change this call
A Korean government agency (e.g. National Tax Service or Supreme Court) switches its document security vendor from MarkAny to Fasoo. Would show MarkAny's core public-sector moat is eroding, not just its new AI products.
MarkAny reports independently attributable SaForus or AI DLP enterprise revenue by end of 2026. Would show its new AI-era products are gaining traction beyond legacy DRM business.
EU AI Act watermarking compliance (deadlines Aug 2 and Dec 2, 2026) gets satisfied by bundled platform tools rather than specialist vendors like MarkAny. Would show platform-native watermarking is commoditizing the market MarkAny is targeting for growth.

Named risks
  • SaForus, SDR, and AI DLP products launched 2025-2026 show no confirmed independent revenue traction yet. Severity: high
  • Frontier AI platforms bundling free watermarking (SynthID, Stable Signature) could commoditize standalone watermarking SaaS. Severity: high
  • Fasoo's more aggressive Southeast Asia and vertical expansion could erode MarkAny's regional market share. Severity: medium
  • Financial opacity as a private, non-disclosing company limits verifiable evidence of growth or stability. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
What is MarkAny's biggest risk?
The main risk is that global AI-native data-leak-prevention vendors, especially Cyera and Microsoft Purview, already shipped AI DLP tools well before MarkAny's equivalent launched in June 2026. Cyera's AI-native Omni DLP shipped in April 2025, over a year ahead of MarkAny, and Microsoft added Copilot prompt DLP into Purview in 2026 while MarkAny was still sponsoring a Microsoft conference that November. Its edge relies on procurement familiarity within Korean government and enterprise buyers rather than distinct technology.
Is MarkAny in financial trouble?
There is no public evidence of financial trouble, but there is also no audited revenue data available to confirm its financial health as of the July 2026 assessment. MarkAny claims recognition from 3,500-plus companies, though this figure is vendor-stated and undated. Whether the company releases audited revenue figures or files for an IPO by mid-2027 is listed as an open watch-item.
Is MarkAny at risk from AI?
Partly. MarkAny's core business of pattern-matching data protection is the same approach that AI-native rivals Cyera and Microsoft Purview have already automated and shipped as of 2025 and 2026 respectively. Its own AI DLP and screen-detection products only launched in June 2026, and the first renewal cycle for these products in H1 2027 is a dated point where their competitiveness can be checked.
Does MarkAny have any competitive edge over Microsoft or Cyera?
MarkAny's edge is less about technology and more about entrenched relationships, holding 250-plus patents and decades of government contracts since its founding in Seoul in February 1999. Korean public-sector procurement rules favor certified domestic vendors, which gives MarkAny a structural shield that Microsoft and Cyera do not have in that market. The technology itself is not strongly differentiated, since Cyera and Microsoft both shipped comparable AI-native DLP tools before MarkAny's equivalent launched in June 2026.
