The call

McKinsey's brand and client relationships are intact, but the entry level jobs that once fed its partner pipeline are shrinking under AI automation.

McKinsey is a consulting firm that advises company leaders on strategy and business problems. It is hard to replace because of its 100-year reputation and deep ties to CEO offices, but rivals like Deloitte and Accenture are chasing the same work. The real threat is that AI can now do the research, writing, and slide-building that junior consultants used to do, which means fewer entry-level jobs exist and the path from junior worker to partner is getting steeper. The company makes money by selling AI transformation services to clients while using AI to cut junior staff, which works for profit in the short term but narrows the career ladder that used to attract talented new hires.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude) automating analyst research and slide work. AI now does the junior research and synthesis work that used to justify hiring waves of analysts. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Deloitte, Accenture, PwC, EY. Big Four firms are building AI native offerings and pushing upmarket, though none has yet taken a flagship strategy engagement. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Decades of C-suite trust and government access that AI tools and rival firms cannot yet replicate.
What would change this call
McKinsey 2026 full-year revenue reported flat or down vs. $15-16B baseline. Would show the five-year stagnation continuing despite AI monetization efforts.
A Big Four firm (Deloitte, Accenture, PwC, EY) publicly wins a flagship strategy mandate from a McKinsey client. Would show incumbent rivals moving upmarket into McKinsey's core turf, not just implementation work.
Senior McKinsey partners depart to launch or join AI-transformation boutiques. Would show partner-level erosion and loss of confidence in the narrowing pyramid model.

Questions people ask
Is McKinsey & Company profitable and growing in 2026?
McKinsey's revenue has flatlined around $15 to 16 billion annually for five consecutive years through December 2025, per Bloomberg reporting. Global managing partner Bob Sternfels claimed in December 2025 the firm is seeing improving growth, but no independent revenue reacceleration has been confirmed as of mid 2026.
Is McKinsey laying off employees?
Yes. McKinsey cut about 200 technology and support jobs in November 2025 tied to AI automation, and in December 2025 announced plans to cut roughly 10 percent of non client facing headcount over 18 to 24 months, after headcount fell from about 45,000 in 2023 to 38,000 to 40,000 by May 2025.
Could AI replace McKinsey consultants?
AI is automating junior analyst and associate work like research synthesis and slide building, the labor layer McKinsey's leverage model relied on, driving real internal cuts as of late 2025. But McKinsey is also selling AI transformation services via OpenAI's Frontier Alliance (February 2026) and Anthropic deals, hedging displacement with new revenue.
Who owns McKinsey & Company?
McKinsey is privately owned by roughly 2,500 to 3,000 active partners globally, with about 750 Senior Partners holding the largest equity, per a March 2026 ownership analysis. There is no public stock or outside investors; its internal fund MIO Partners manages an estimated $15 to 30 billion in partner retirement assets.
Who is McKinsey's biggest competitor?
McKinsey's closest peers are Boston Consulting Group (about $14.4 billion revenue, 33,500 employees in 2025) and Bain & Company (about $7.5 billion revenue, 18,385 employees). Accenture and the Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) are pushing upmarket into AI transformation work, competing for the same clients as of 2026.
What is McKinsey's opioid settlement liability?
McKinsey has paid or committed roughly $765 million plus in opioid related settlements since 2021, including a $650 million DOJ resolution finalized December 2024 and a $125 million Purdue Pharma bankruptcy contribution agreed in April 2026, with $60 million still due in 2027.
