The call

Meiji's Japan business is solid and protected by shelf relationships and licenses, but growth outside Japan has stalled and a pricing probe now hangs over its ice cream margins.

Meiji makes milk, yogurt, chocolate, and ice cream sold across Japan, plus vaccines and medicines. It is hard to replace because Japanese families trust the brand, stores give it prime shelf space, and keeping dairy cold from factory to store requires expensive networks that took decades to build. But the company struggles overseas (it lost billions trying to grow in China) and Japan itself is not growing much, so even though the business is safe, it will not get much bigger. The real risk is if Japan's antitrust regulator punishes Meiji heavily for ice cream price-fixing in 2026, which could permanently shrink profits in that category.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI has no visible role eating or feeding grocery-shelf dairy and confectionery in Japan; this is a distribution and regulation fight, not a model fight. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No single giant is squeezing Meiji; the pressure is regulatory (JFTC) and its own failed China expansion, not a bigger rival taking share. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Cold-chain distribution and decades of retail shelf relationships in Japan plus pharma manufacturing licenses that new entrants can't quickly get.
What would change this call
JFTC ruling on ice-cream price-fixing probe (raids June 2026), expected within 6-12 months. Would show whether Meiji faces forced pricing changes or fines that reset category margins.
Close of China dairy subsidiary divestiture by December 31, 2026. Would show whether Meiji can exit overseas losses cleanly or takes another impairment.
FY2026 operating profit results versus guided 78.2% rebound to ¥62.5 billion. Would show whether management can execute its recovery plan or misses targets again.

  • China dairy divestiture (closing Dec 31, 2026) could face further impairments or related-party approval delays. Severity: medium
  • FY2027 guidance of 78.2% profit rebound may not be met, following missed 2026 Medium-Term Plan targets. Severity: medium
  • Domestic market maturity and shrinking population limit growth beyond input-cost normalization. Severity: medium
  • Continued raw material (cocoa, dairy) cost inflation pressuring Food segment margins. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Meiji Holdings profitable in 2026?
Yes. For the fiscal year ended March 2026, Meiji reported net sales of about 1,173.7 billion yen (+1.7% YoY) and operating income of 93.3 billion yen (+10.2%), though net profit fell 31.0% to 35.1 billion yen due to China-related impairments and restructuring charges.
Is Meiji Holdings exiting China?
Yes. On July 21, 2026, Meiji announced the sale of its Suzhou and Tianjin dairy subsidiaries to Shanghai Aoya Food (AustAsia Group) for about 7.6 billion yen, closing expected December 31, 2026, after cumulative China impairments of roughly 33.7 billion yen since FY2023.
Is Meiji Holdings under antitrust investigation?
Yes. Japan's Fair Trade Commission raided Meiji and five other ice cream makers, including Morinaga Milk, Lotte, and Ezaki Glico, on June 16, 2026, over suspected price-fixing on ice cream, with an outcome likely 6 to 12 months out.
Could AI replace Meiji Holdings' core business?
No. Meiji's core is physical dairy and confectionery manufacturing, cold-chain distribution, and regulated pharmaceutical production, none easily automated. Its main AI initiative is a narrow elder-care app (rRAFU) launched with Fujitsu on February 12, 2026, not a core-revenue tool.
Who is Meiji Holdings' biggest competitor?
In Japanese chocolate confectionery, Meiji and Lotte each hold roughly 15% category share as of 2026, per Euromonitor, making Lotte its closest domestic rival, alongside Morinaga Milk, Morinaga & Co., Ezaki Glico, and Akagi Nyugyo in dairy and ice cream.
What is Meiji Holdings' FY2027 profit guidance?
Meiji guided for the fiscal year ending March 2027 to net sales of 1,212.0 billion yen (+3.3%), operating profit of 100.0 billion yen (+7.2%), and profit attributable to owners rebounding 78.2% to 62.5 billion yen, per its July 7, 2026 outlook.
