The call

Profits are rising even as franchised classrooms shrink, with new licensed segments doing the work of offsetting the core tutoring decline.

Meiko Network Japan owns and franchises about 1,600 small tutoring centers across Japan that help students with homework and test prep. The company faces two big threats: free AI tools like ChatGPT now do homework help for students, and Japan's population of children keeps shrinking, so fewer kids need tutoring. Meiko has tried to fight back by building its own AI tablet system and moving into new businesses like training foreign workers to speak Japanese and running day-care centers for disabled adults, all of which get government support and cannot be replaced by AI. The key question is whether these new businesses can grow fast enough and make enough money to replace the classroom tutoring centers the company is losing each year, especially as Japan continues to have fewer children.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini used for homework help. Half its own students already use generative AI for homework, but Meiko folds AI into its RED tablet format instead of losing them to it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Benesse Holdings (Tokyo Kojin, Shinkenzemi). Benesse already sells competing correspondence and tutoring products nationwide, though no AI-native tutor from them has launched yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Local classroom licenses, government contracts in disability care and Japanese-language training, and a 40-year franchise network AI can't replicate.

Questions people ask
Is Meiko Network Japan profitable?
Yes. For FY2025 (ended Aug 31 2025) Meiko Network Japan reported consolidated revenue of ¥24.827 billion (+10% YoY) and operating profit of ¥1.691 billion, up 67.4% YoY, beating its mid-term plan a year early.
Could AI replace Meiko Gijuku's tutors?
Partially exposed. A company-commissioned survey (Jul 2026) found roughly half of K-12 students already use generative AI for homework, but Meiko has embedded its own AI-tablet format 'Jiritsu Gagusshu RED' with Sprix since 2019 and relies on physical classrooms and licensed adjacencies AI can't replicate.
Who is Meiko Network Japan's biggest competitor?
Benesse Holdings, via its Tokyo Kojin (Tokyo Individualized Educational Institute) chain, is the closest incumbent rival in Japan's individual-tutoring segment; brokers also group Riso Kyoiku (TOMAS) and Seigakusha as peers as of August 2025.
Who owns Meiko Network Japan?
It is an independent, TSE Prime-listed company (ticker 4668), not a subsidiary; market capitalization was roughly ¥21.2 billion as of August 2025 per Kabutan, later estimated ¥16-20 billion by mid-2026 sources.
Is Meiko Network Japan's franchise business shrinking?
Yes. As of Q2 FY2026 (Feb 28, 2026), franchised Meiko Gijuku classrooms fell to 1,183, down 32 year-over-year, while directly-operated schools also dipped to 481, down 6 YoY.
What new businesses is Meiko Network Japan expanding into?
Beyond tutoring, Meiko launched Meiko Free School (first site Nov 2025, 3 locations by Apr 2026), a correspondence high school with Ueda Koo Gakuen (first campus Apr 2026), and Japanese-language training contracts with Kanagawa (Jan 2026) and Hiroshima (Jul 2026) prefectures.
