The call

Melio survived being bought and holds the licenses that keep AI-only rivals out, but Ramp already ships the automation Melio still lacks.

Melio lets companies pay bills faster and manage cash flow automatically. It has licenses and regulatory approval that new AI startups cannot easily copy, but established competitors like Ramp, Bill.com, and QuickBooks already do similar work and are adding smart AI features Melio has not yet matched, such as automatically reading and sorting invoices and linking to accounting software. The key question is whether Melio can catch up on AI capabilities within the next year, or if customers will switch to faster, smarter rivals.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ramp. Ramp ships agentic invoice coding, PO matching, and fraud detection now; Melio skips these and is pitched as the switch target. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: BILL (Bill.com) and Intuit QuickBooks Bill Pay. Both sit inside the same SMB accounting workflows Melio needs and can bundle AP deeper into their own books-of-record. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Money-movement licenses, bank rails, and the regulatory work needed to move funds keep pure-software AI entrants out.
What would change this call
Xero reports Melio revenue/contribution vs $500M earnout milestones in FY2026-2028 earnings. Shows whether Melio is growing under Xero or missing integration targets.
Melio ships auto-coding, PO matching, or ERP-depth features matching Ramp within 12 months. Shows whether Melio closes its AI feature gap or keeps lagging Ramp.
Intuit publicly changes or drops Melio integration inside QuickBooks Bill Pay. Would show a key distribution channel for Melio eroding.

Questions people ask
Is Melio profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figure has been disclosed. Melio reported $153M revenue for FY2025 (ended March 31, 2025) and an annualized run rate of $187M, but Xero has not broken out net income for the Melio segment since closing the $2.5B acquisition on October 15, 2025.
Who owns Melio now?
Melio is a wholly owned subsidiary of Xero Limited (ASX: XRO), a New Zealand accounting software company. Xero completed the $2.5 billion acquisition on October 15, 2025, with up to $500M more in earnout payments to Melio staff over three years.
Could AI replace Melio's core product?
AI threatens Melio's visible feature layer, not its licensing rails. A July 11, 2026 comparison found Melio 'deliberately skips AI invoice coding, purchase-order matching, and deeper ERP integrations' that rival Ramp already ships, per beancount.io.
Who is Melio's biggest competitor?
Ramp is the most cited AI-native threat, marketed since mid-2026 as the top Melio alternative with auto-coding and fraud-detection agents (ramp.com, 2026-06-30). BILL (Bill.com) remains the larger SMB bill-pay incumbent, and Intuit QuickBooks is a channel rival post-Xero deal.
What is Melio's valuation history?
Melio raised a $250M Series D in August 2024 at a $4B valuation, then a $150M Series E led by Fiserv in November 2024 reportedly at $2B, before Xero acquired it for $2.5B upfront (up to $3.9B with earnouts) on October 15, 2025.
Did Melio's earnout targets get hit after the Xero deal?
As of Xero's October 15, 2025 completion statement, Melio 'has traded in line with Xero's expectations' through H1 of Xero's FY2026 (April to September 2025). No specific earnout milestone results have been disclosed yet toward the $500M three-year target.
