The call

Mobvoi's software business is shrinking fast while it bets on TicNote hardware, a pivot with one year of sales history and no proof yet that it holds.

Mobvoi builds smartwatches and recorders that use voice commands and AI to take notes and control devices. It is easy for much larger companies to copy or replace because Google, Apple, Amazon, and the Chinese company iFlytek already offer the same features built directly into phones, watches, and speakers that billions of people already own and trust. The one thing that could change this is if TicNote, Mobvoi's new AI recorder product, sells in real volume during the next year or two and keeps customers coming back, but right now it has no sales history to prove it will work.

Why
01
AI pressure: Gemini Live, Alexa+, and other native agentic voice assistants. Big labs now ship agentic voice recording and note-taking inside phones and earbuds, the same job TicNote does as a separate device. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: iFlytek in China, Google/Amazon/Apple globally. iFlytek dominates Chinese voice AI while Google, Amazon, and Apple bundle wearables and assistants for free, and Mobvoi's software revenue fell 37.5% in FY2025. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. AI Hardware revenue grew 14.5% to RMB174.2M in FY2025, giving the company one segment that isn't shrinking while software collapses.
What would change this call
Mobvoi's H1 2026 interim results show whether revenue returns to growth or keeps declining. Would show whether the TicNote hardware pivot is offsetting software losses.
Whether Customer A (30.6% of FY2025 revenue) appears as a retained or lost client in the next annual report. Loss of this customer would signal severe customer concentration risk materializing.
Continued share disposals by Perfect Optronics/Skyteam reported in HKEX filings through 2026. Would indicate ongoing insider selling pressure on Mobvoi's stock.

  • Core AI features rely on third-party models GPT-4o and DeepSeek-R1 rather than proprietary technology. Severity: medium
  • Legacy shareholder Perfect Optronics continues periodic share disposals, adding sustained selling pressure. Severity: medium
  • TicNote hardware pivot launched April 2025 has no multi-year sales track record proving durable demand. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
What is Mobvoi's biggest risk?
The biggest risk is being squeezed from both sides at once: iFlytek held over 40% of China's speech recognition market as of March 2026, and ByteDance's Doubao voice input reportedly reached 12 million daily actives within weeks of its November 2025 launch, while Huawei and Xiaomi contest its TicWatch hardware line directly. Our July 2026 assessment found little protecting the business, with no clear technical or customer lock-in identified, placing Mobvoi among the weakest positioned companies in its 263-company A1 category.
Is Mobvoi in financial trouble?
Mobvoi's FY2025 revenue was RMB323.0 million, down 17.2% year over year (2026-03-27), and H2 2025 revenue fell roughly 41% after H1 2025 had actually risen 10.0% to RMB178.9 million (2025-08-21). The FY2025 net loss did narrow sharply to RMB68.9 million from RMB721.5 million in FY2024, which is an improvement, but revenue concentration is a separate concern since one customer made up 31% of FY2025 revenue (2026-03-27).
Who are Mobvoi's biggest competitors?
On voice AI software, Mobvoi competes against iFlytek, which held over 40% of China's speech recognition market as of March 2026, ByteDance's Doubao, and global players like Google's Gemini Live and OpenAI's gpt-realtime, both closing the gap with specialist voice vendors in 2026. On hardware, Huawei and Xiaomi contest its TicWatch smartwatch line with their own in-house wearables and voice AI, and Mobvoi holds no disclosed advantage against either group as of the July 2026 assessment.
Is Mobvoi at risk from AI?
Yes, the AI threat is marked as already shipped rather than hypothetical: free, built-in voice AI from ByteDance's Doubao, Google's Gemini Live, and OpenAI's realtime voice API now covers much of the transcription and assistant functionality Mobvoi charges for. Our July 2026 assessment found little proprietary protection against these larger, free alternatives, placing Mobvoi near the bottom of the 263-company A1 category on this dimension.
What should I watch for with Mobvoi going forward?
Two dated checkpoints matter: whether Mobvoi's FY2026 annual revenue stays below its FY2024 level of RMB390.3 million (verifiable by 2027-03), and whether Customer A still represents more than 25% of total revenue in the FY2026 results (also by 2027-03). The nearer-term signal is the H1 2026 interim results expected in August 2026, which should give the first real read on TicNote Cloud revenue and customer concentration.
