The call

Traffic is still climbing and the exam catalog is huge, but free AI tutors already do the core job and Mometrix has not shown its own answer yet.

Mometrix built a library of study guides, practice questions, and explanations for thousands of specific exams and tests, then grew by ranking high in Google search results. It worked for 20 years because there was no better free option, but now ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Khan Academy offer similar study help for free, and other test-prep companies like NURSING.com have already added AI tutors. Mometrix has not shown a public AI tool to compete, which raises questions about whether students will keep paying. The real turning point will be whether Mometrix launches its own AI tutor within the next year and whether its website traffic stays growing or starts dropping as more students use free AI instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT Study Mode, Google Gemini test-prep, Khan Academy Khanmigo, NURSING.com NurseJon. Free chatbots now explain exam answers and quiz users on demand, the exact job Mometrix charges for. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Kaplan, UWorld, ATI, Khan Academy. Bigger prep brands have budgets to bolt on AI tutors fast, while Mometrix has shown no public AI move yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 1,500-exam catalog with weekly updates and two decades of SEO traffic that AI tools have not yet replicated exam by exam.
What would change this call
Mometrix launches a branded AI tutor or adaptive practice engine within 12 months. Shows Mometrix is responding to AI-driven study tools instead of relying on static guides.
Mometrix's quarterly organic traffic growth (last at +12.8% QoQ) reverses or stalls. Would indicate free AI tools are diverting the long-tail exam search queries it relies on.
NURSING.com or another niche rival announces measurable NurseJon or AI-tutor user adoption numbers. Would confirm a direct competitor's AI tool is gaining real traction over Mometrix's offering.

Questions people ask
Is Mometrix profitable and financially stable in 2026?
Mometrix is privately held with no institutional venture funding on record. Revenue estimates from third-party vendors range wildly from about 4.4 million to 23.3 million dollars annually as of 2026, a 5x discrepancy that signals no verified public financials exist for this closely held company.
Could AI chatbots replace Mometrix's test prep products?
Likely for much of its free content. Mometrix's explanations, practice questions and study guides overlap with what ChatGPT Study Mode, Gemini test-prep, and Khanmigo now do for free. As of March 2026 no evidence shows Mometrix has shipped a comparable AI tutor, unlike nursing rival NURSING.com's NurseJon AI (2025).
Who owns Mometrix Test Preparation?
Mometrix Media LLC is privately owned and independently held, with no parent company or acquisition reported as of July 2026. Leadership includes Matthew Bowling as Executive Managing Partner since 2007, alongside Executive Partners Eric Manthei and Peter Rench, indicating a founder-partner ownership structure.
How many employees does Mometrix have?
Third-party data provider Crustdata estimated 82 employees as of June 2026, roughly flat year over year, having peaked near 88 in January 2024. Other vendors like ZoomInfo and Prospeo give inconsistent ranges between 11 and 200 employees.
Who are Mometrix's biggest competitors?
Crustdata lists Study.com, Khan Academy, Peterson's and ATI Nursing Education as competitors as of June 2026. In its nursing/NCLEX vertical specifically, UWorld, Kaplan, ATI, NURSING.com and Hurst are named as leading review-course rivals by nurse.org in April 2026.
Has Mometrix launched an AI tutor to compete with ChatGPT and Khanmigo?
No. As of March 2026, no evidence exists that Mometrix shipped an AI tutor, adaptive testing feature, or AI content pipeline. This contrasts with direct nursing-prep competitor NURSING.com, which launched its NurseJon AI tutor in 2025, bundled into its NCLEX package.
