Monad Labs
Monad Labs runs a high-speed Layer-1 blockchain for parallel EVM smart contracts.
Monad has a live chain, funding, and early apps, but most of its liquidity is borrowed from bigger ecosystems and a large token unlock is coming in November 2026.
Monad is a blockchain (a type of digital ledger that processes transactions fast) that launched in November 2025 with $225 million in funding. It can process about 10,000 transactions per second using a technical trick called parallel execution, and it works with existing apps built for Ethereum. The problem is that Solana, another fast blockchain, already has ten times more money locked in it and is adding its own speed upgrades called Firedancer. Monad borrowed most of its apps from other blockchains instead of attracting new ones built just for it, and even lost a major trading app in May 2026. The big unknown is whether Monad can build its own apps and whether a huge release of new MON tokens in November 2026 will hurt people's faith in the project, or whether Solana's upgrades will make Monad's speed advantage disappear.
Behavior of MON price and validator participation after the ~16.8B token unlock around Nov 2026. Shows if the ecosystem absorbs sell pressure or suffers a liquidity/validator crisis.
Whether MegaETH ships a mainnet with comparable parallel-EVM throughput to Monad's claimed ~10k TPS. Shows whether Monad's technical speed advantage still differentiates it from new entrants.
- $225M Series A led by Paradigm at ~$3B valuation
- TVL reached $410M-$621M, ~90% from ported apps
- Orderly delisted Monad citing ~$14,000 TVL
- Large MON token unlock (~16.8B tokens) in November 2026 could trigger sell pressure or validator instability.
- About 90% of TVL is ported liquidity (Uniswap, Curve, Aave), with weak native app formation.
- Builder attrition pattern, exemplified by Orderly's May 22, 2026 delisting citing near-zero TVL.
- DeFi security incidents on Monad-hosted apps, following the $76.7M notional Echo Protocol exploit in May 2026.
- Unconfirmed July 2026 'Series C' report suggests funding-status confusion that could mask actual capital position.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Solana | losing to | Solana held ~$5.8B TVL vs Monad's $410-621M by mid-2026, plus Firedancer/Alpenglow upgrades |
| Sui | gaining on | Sui TVL grew ~4.7x from $380M to $1.8B between Jan 2025 and Apr 2026 |
| MegaETH | contesting | MegaETH mainnet threatens to match Monad's parallel-EVM performance claims if it ships comparably |
| BNB Chain | losing to | BNB Chain reached $5B TVL within 6 months of its 2021 launch, a bar Monad has not matched by mid-2026 |
- Is Monad Labs profitable?
- No. As of July 2026 Monad Labs (now Category Labs) has disclosed no audited revenue. The company runs on protocol/token economics (gas fees in MON, validator staking) rather than SaaS revenue, and is pre-revenue in the traditional sense.
- Who owns Monad Labs and how much funding has it raised?
- Monad Labs is privately held and venture backed. It raised a $19M seed round led by Dragonfly Capital in February 2023, then a $225M Series A led by Paradigm in April 2024 at roughly a $3B valuation.
- Is Solana Monad's biggest competitor?
- Yes. As of April 2026 Solana held about $5.8B in TVL versus Monad's $410-621M by mid-2026, roughly ten times Monad's liquidity base, while shipping its own Firedancer and Alpenglow performance upgrades in the same high-throughput L1 race.
- Could AI replace the engineers building Monad?
- Not directly. Monad's core value is consensus engineering, a custom database (MonadDB), and staked validator security, none of which AI can substitute for since blockchain security requires capital at risk. AI coding tools can, however, speed up rivals replicating its parallel-EVM optimizations.
- What happened in the Echo Protocol exploit on Monad?
- On May 18-19, 2026, Echo Protocol's eBTC deployment on Monad suffered a $76.7M notional exploit (about $816K-$867K real loss) via a compromised admin key. Monad's core chain and consensus were not compromised, per CEO Keone Hon and Echo.
- How big is Monad's blockchain ecosystem right now?
- As of mid-2026, Monad lists around 300 deployed protocols with about 78 exclusive to the chain, daily transactions near 2.1M, and roughly 370,000 active addresses as of May 19, 2026, though most TVL still comes from ported apps.
