The call

Monex is profitable and licensed but stays the smaller player in each market it competes in, leaning on DOCOMO and KDDI ties rather than scale to hold its place.

Monex Group runs an online brokerage in Japan, an active trading platform in the US, and a crypto exchange. It is hard to knock off because brokers need government licenses and must hold customer money safely, which computers alone cannot do. But Monex is smaller than SBI (which dominates Japan), Rakuten, and other rivals that already have more customers and deeper pockets, and it just handed control of its biggest business to NTT DOCOMO in early 2024. The one thing that could save it: whether DOCOMO's plan to sell trading accounts through its phone app and payment service actually works and brings in real revenue growth by mid-2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic AI trading agents and robo-advisor tools. AI can write trade commentary but cannot hold custody or execute trades without Monex's broker-dealer license. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: SBI Securities and Rakuten Securities in Japan, Interactive Brokers and Schwab in the US. SBI holds about 36% of Japan online brokerage and Rakuten about 19%, versus Monex's roughly 5%, with all three products live and competing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Broker-dealer and exchange licenses plus custody rules block AI-only rivals, and DOCOMO/KDDI distribution deals bring in accounts Monex could not reach alone.

Questions people ask
Is Monex Group in financial trouble?
No signs of financial trouble appear in the data: Monex Group reported total assets of ¥746.77 billion as of June 26, 2026, and a market capitalization of ¥184.75 billion as of July 25, 2026, with 1,121 employees on the payroll as of March 31, 2026. Its FYE March 2026 profit of ¥10.9 billion marks a swing from a ¥5.1 billion loss the year before, so the current concern is competitive positioning, not cash flow.
Who are Monex Group's biggest competitors?
In Japan's brokerage and crypto cohort, Monex sits behind SBI Holdings in overall scale and behind bitFlyer in crypto trading volume, while also competing with Rakuten Securities and Rakuten Wallet for the same retail accounts. SBI's pending Bitbank acquisition, expected to close around October 2026, would widen that gap further by making SBI Japan's largest crypto operator by assets.
Is Monex Group at risk from AI?
Based on the July 2026 assessment, no AI trading or robo-advisory product is shown displacing Monex's brokerage or crypto customers today, so AI displacement risk is rated 'not applicable.' The company's more pressing pressure comes from consolidation among larger financial and crypto rivals rather than from AI-driven substitutes.
What protects Monex Group from competitors copying its business?
Monex Group's main protection is its telco distribution alliance with NTT DOCOMO, KDDI, and SBI Sumishin Net Bank, which brought in more than 47,000 new brokerage accounts in January 2026 alone. That said, this protection looks limited rather than a strong barrier to entry: Monex lost board control of its own brokerage to NTT DOCOMO in January 2024 and now holds only a 51% equity-method stake, meaning the alliance that brings it customers also leaves it without operating control of the business those customers join.
What should someone watch to see how Monex Group's situation develops?
Two dated milestones are worth tracking: the SBI Holdings acquisition of Bitbank is expected to close around October 2026, which would make SBI Japan's largest crypto operator by assets and pressure Coincheck's standing. Separately, the three-way alliance services between NTT DOCOMO, SBI Sumishin Net Bank, and Monex are set to launch by August 2026, a point to check for whether new account growth at Monex Securities continues at pace.
