The call

Motive has real revenue and locked-in customers, but it is heading into public markets as the slower-growing number two behind Samsara, with litigation losses and an unpriced IPO still hanging over it.

Motive makes software and hardware that tracks trucks and drivers for safety and compliance, earning $370 million in annual revenue. It is hard to replace because fleets have already installed its equipment in 100,000 vehicles and depend on it for legal requirements, but Samsara is growing three times faster, is already larger, and just won a $30 million lawsuit against Motive for stealing trade secrets. The company's path forward depends on whether it can keep growing fast enough after going public to prove it is more than just the second-place option in a two-player market.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Motive builds its own AI into dashcams and driver scoring, so AI is a feature it sells, not something eating it yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Samsara Inc.. Samsara is bigger, public, growing roughly three times faster, and has already won a $30.3M judgment against Motive. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Nearly 100,000 customers with hardware already installed in vehicles and locked into ELD compliance, making switching costly.
What would change this call
Motive's IPO priced at or above the ~$2.85B Series F valuation. Would show public markets still value Motive's growth despite Samsara's faster pace.
Outcome of USPTO IPR petitions (IPR2026-00034, IPR2026-00108) against Samsara's patents. Would show whether Motive can blunt Samsara's litigation pressure.
Motive's quarterly YoY revenue growth rate in first post-IPO earnings report. Would show whether Motive is closing or widening the growth gap with Samsara.

Questions people ask
Is Motive Technologies profitable in 2026?
No. Motive posted a $153.0M net loss on $370.5M revenue in FY2024, and for the nine months ended September 30, 2025 revenue was $327.3M, up 22% YoY, still unprofitable heading into its December 23, 2025 IPO filing.
Who is Motive Technologies' biggest competitor?
Samsara Inc. is Motive's direct rival in fleet telematics. Samsara IPO'd in December 2021 with ~$493M ARR growing ~70% YoY, far outpacing Motive's 22% growth, and won a $30.3M false-advertising judgment against Motive as of June 16, 2026.
Could AI replace Motive Technologies?
Not easily. Motive's moat is roughly 100,000 customers running installed dashcam and ELD hardware as of September 30, 2025, generating proprietary driving data and DOT compliance lock-in that a pure software or generic AI vision model cannot replicate without physical distribution.
Is Motive Technologies going public and when?
Motive publicly filed its S-1 for an NYSE listing under ticker MTVE on December 23, 2025. A roadshow was reportedly planned for the week of January 12, 2026 per Bloomberg, but was reportedly delayed by January 16, 2026, with no confirmed pricing date as of July 2026.
Who owns Motive Technologies?
Motive remains privately venture-backed as of July 2026, with investors including Kleiner Perkins, Insight Partners, Index Ventures, GV, IVP, Scale Venture Partners, Greenoaks and AllianceBernstein, ahead of its December 23, 2025 S-1 filing for an NYSE IPO.
What is Motive Technologies worth?
Motive's last confirmed private valuation was $2.85B post-money from a $150M Series F round led by Insight Partners and Kleiner Perkins on May 26, 2022. IPO pricing and valuation remained unconfirmed as of July 2026.
