The call

NSE still controls the plumbing of Indian markets, but BSE is chewing into its most profitable derivatives segment right as NSE heads into a public listing.

The National Stock Exchange runs India's main marketplace where people and companies buy and sell stocks and futures. The exchange makes money by charging fees on trades. NSE is hard to replace because India's government gave it an official license and very strict rules protect its position, plus 250 million people already have accounts there. However, the Bombay Stock Exchange is stealing profitable business in options trading (reaching 55% of the market briefly in April 2026), and government regulators are limiting how many risky futures trades are allowed, which cuts into NSE's profits. The biggest question is whether BSE can keep taking that business away or if NSE will hold its lead.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI-driven trading tools run on top of NSE's rails and add volume, they don't bypass the exchange itself. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). BSE has taken 28-42% of index options and briefly beat NSE in total F&O turnover in April 2026. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. SEBI license, 93% cash market share, clearing guarantee fund, and 250M+ locked-in investor accounts.

Questions people ask
Is the National Stock Exchange of India profitable?
Yes. NSE reported FY26 (year ended March 2026) net profit of ₹10,302 crore on total income of ₹18,700 crore, a net margin around 51-53%, though profit fell about 15% year over year due to cooling derivatives trading and new F&O rules.
Is NSE going public and when?
NSE filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus with SEBI on June 18, 2026, structuring the IPO as an offer-for-sale of about 14.89 crore shares (roughly 6% of equity) with no fresh capital raised. Listing is expected on BSE around October to November 2026.
Who owns the National Stock Exchange of India?
As of March 2025 about 36% is held by public-sector entities including LIC (10.7%) and SBI group banks/insurers, alongside private equity holders Temasek, PremjiInvest and Morgan Stanley. NSE has roughly 200,000 shareholders, reportedly India's largest unlisted shareholder base, per a February 2026 report.
Is BSE overtaking NSE as India's top exchange?
In high-margin F&O trading, yes at times: BSE's index options share rose from about 3.7% in FY24 to 28-42% in FY26, and BSE briefly surpassed NSE in total F&O notional turnover (55.4% vs 44.6%) in April 2026. NSE still holds about 93% of cash-market trading.
Could AI replace what NSE does?
No. NSE's core function is a SEBI-licensed exchange with an exclusive clearing and settlement monopoly, backed by a ₹13,079.15 crore Core Settlement Guarantee Fund as of March 2026. AI can augment surveillance and fraud detection but cannot substitute for the regulated licensing and clearing infrastructure itself.
What is NSE worth ahead of its IPO?
Based on unlisted-market share prices of roughly ₹1,900-2,050 per share in June-July 2026, NSE's implied market capitalization is about ₹5.0-5.06 lakh crore, or roughly USD 55-57 billion, far above older $6.5B unicorn tags for the company.
