The call

NTU sits at the top of a state-run credentialing system that AI feeds through platforms like TAICA rather than threatens, while rivals climb without touching its funding or degree monopoly.

National Taiwan University is Taiwan's leading research and teaching university. It is hard to replace because only the government can issue Taiwan-recognized degrees, it runs a teaching hospital that needs years to build, and it gets the biggest government budget of any local school. Other Taiwan universities and foreign schools cannot do what NTU does, and AI cannot hand out official credentials or run hospitals, so neither poses a real threat right now. The real risk is that Taiwan's population is shrinking, so there will be fewer students to teach in 15 years, and even the best university will feel that squeeze eventually.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tutoring tools like ChatGPT and AI-driven literature search platforms. AI can handle routine lectures, tutoring, and paper search, but cannot issue MOE-accredited degrees or run NTU's teaching hospital. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Regional peers NYCU and NTHU, and global universities like NUS or HKU. Domestic rivals are rising and foreign universities outrank NTU globally, but neither can grant Taiwanese degrees or tap MOE flagship funding. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. MOE degree-granting monopoly, largest state subsidy in Taiwan, and a teaching hospital that AI and foreign schools cannot replicate.
What would change this call
Legislative Yuan approves or rejects MOE research-center subsidy budget (pending mid-2025). Would show whether state funding backing continues to grow or gets constrained.
Control Yuan probe into 2022 thesis case concludes or reopens (flagged April 2026). Would show whether governance scandal risks escalate beyond headline noise.
QS World and Asia rankings released June and November 2026. Would show whether NTU's upward ranking trajectory continues or stalls.

Questions people ask
Is National Taiwan University losing ground to rival Taiwanese universities?
No. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 released June 18, 2026, NTU rose to 54th globally, its highest ever, up from 63rd the prior year. Domestic peers like NTHU (142nd) and NCKU (191st) are also rising, but none has displaced NTU as Taiwan's top-ranked university.
Could AI replace National Taiwan University?
No. AI can automate lecture delivery and intro tutoring, but NTU holds a Ministry of Education degree-granting monopoly, runs a regulated teaching hospital, and is Taiwan's most prestigious admissions target. NTU deploys AI itself, expanding its Nvidia-linked TAICA alliance to 55 member universities by November 2025.
Is National Taiwan University's government funding growing or shrinking?
Growing. NTU received NT$2.63 billion under Taiwan's MOE 'Building Top Universities' program for FY2025/26, the largest subsidy of any Taiwanese university, up NT$32.64 million year on year, per a June 23, 2025 report.
Who owns National Taiwan University?
NTU is a national public university owned by the Republic of China government and supervised by the Ministry of Education. It has no private shareholders and operates as a non-profit state institution, founded in 1928 and renamed NTU on November 15, 1945.
Is National Taiwan University's biggest competitor domestic or foreign?
Domestic. National Tsing Hua University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and National Cheng Kung University are NTU's closest rivals, all rising in the QS 2027 rankings released June 18, 2026, but none has overtaken NTU's number one spot in Taiwan.
Is National Taiwan University at risk from Taiwan's falling birth rate?
Not immediately. Taiwan's demographic decline is squeezing university-age population sector wide, but as the top of pyramid flagship, NTU is expected to feel this last and least; material risk to NTU's own enrollment is estimated on a 15-plus year horizon.
