The call

Nearfield holds a physics based edge in subsurface chip metrology with real Samsung and Asian fab orders, but its revenue still looks small next to its $1.6B valuation and scale-up plans.

Nearfield Instruments makes machines that use a physics technique called AFM to measure inside semiconductor chips in ways that regular optical tools cannot. The company has locked in multi-year contracts with Samsung and other major chipmakers, and the physics of how AFM works makes it genuinely hard for bigger rivals like KLA and Onto Innovation to copy the same capability in less than three years. The problem is that Nearfield is valued at $1.6 billion but only brings in roughly $46 to $68 million per year, and most of that comes from a handful of unnamed customers; if the company cannot scale up its manufacturing and support teams fast enough, or if those few customers slow down their orders, the claimed technical advantage will matter much less than it does today.

Why
01
AI pressure: Onto Innovation's AI-driven recipe and metrology software. Onto ships AI recipe tools that speed up optical metrology setup, pulling budget toward its systems instead of AFM tools like QUADRA. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: KLA Corporation. KLA dominates optical process control and competes for the same fab metrology budget, though it has no shipped AFM rival yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. AFM measures subsurface 3D structure that optical tools can't see, and fabs requalify metrology tools over multiple years once locked in.
What would change this call
KLA, Onto, or Bruker ships an AFM or subsurface metrology tool that wins a fab already using Nearfield's QUADRA. Would show the AFM hardware moat is crackable within the claimed 3-year window.
Samsung Electronics requalifies its metrology line off QUADRA to a competitor tool. Would confirm the flagship named customer relationship is not durable.
Nearfield misses stated delivery or quality targets during its $380M manufacturing scale-up in Q4 2026 to Q2 2027. Would show execution risk, not competitor action, is undermining its position.

Questions people ask
Is Nearfield Instruments profitable?
No audited financials are public. Aggregator revenue estimates are excluded as unreliable, but the company raised $380M in a Series D on June 22, 2026 at a $1.6B valuation, suggesting investors are betting on future scale rather than current profit.
Who owns Nearfield Instruments?
Nearfield is privately held, spun off from Dutch research institute TNO in January 2016. TNO retains a minority stake. Its June 22, 2026 Series D of $380M added Qatar Investment Authority and Fidelity alongside existing backers Temasek and Walden Catalyst.
Could KLA or AI replace Nearfield Instruments?
Nearfield's atomic force microscopy based 3D metrology measures subsurface chip features optically-based rivals like KLA cannot easily replicate. As of June 2026 the company still relies on Samsung and a handful of unnamed fabs, so the moat is real but customer breadth is thin.
Who is Nearfield Instruments' biggest competitor?
KLA Corporation dominates process control at roughly seven times the size of its nearest rival, per market commentary from June 22, 2026. Onto Innovation is the faster-growing threat, having won GAA metrology business at TSMC, Samsung and Intel.
Has Nearfield Instruments laid off staff?
No layoffs are reported. Headcount is growing rapidly, from 179 in 2023 to an estimated 580 by March 2026 per Revelio Labs, and the company's own June 2026 statement puts staff at about 450 across seven countries.
What does Nearfield Instruments actually sell?
It sells AFM-based fab-floor metrology hardware, QUADRA for high-aspect-ratio 3D measurement and AUDIRA, launched July 2023 as the industry's first non-destructive in-line subsurface metrology system, with first shipments in Q2 2024.
