NGL Labs
Anonymous Q&A app for social media, now a bolt-on inside Mode Mobile's EarnOS.
NGL no longer runs itself: both founders are gone, the FTC banned its main revenue trick, and its fate now rides entirely on how Mode Mobile reports it.
NGL Labs let people send anonymous messages to each other, making money when users paid for premium features. The company's main way of making money involved tricking people into paying to see fake messages, which U.S. regulators shut down as illegal in July 2024. NGL no longer exists as its own company: it was bought by Mode Mobile in December 2025, the founders left, and only a tiny team stayed. If you own NGL stock, you actually own a piece of Mode Mobile (a rewards company trying to go public), and NGL is now just one small part of Mode's app. The thing to watch is whether NGL users actually stick around and pay for real features inside Mode's app, or whether they disappear now that the fake-message trick is gone, that will tell you if anything valuable was left after the FTC ban.
FTC completes review of NGL refund claims after April 2026 deadline and issues findings. Reveals scale of deceptive-charge harm and whether similar action hits LMK, Sendit, or YOLO.
Mode Mobile's stated 18 to 24 month IPO timeline slips or draws SEC scrutiny. Would signal weaker investor confidence in the entity now holding NGL.
- $5M FTC penalty for deceptive practices
- Only 3 NGL employees transferred to Mode Mobile
- 125M+ claimed MAU, unverified by outside source
- Total platform dependency on Instagram/Snapchat Stories, which already banned the category once in 2022.
- Core monetization mechanic ruled illegal by FTC in July 2024, permanently barred.
- Active FTC refund review post-April 2026 could bring further scrutiny or penalties.
- Parent Mode Mobile is pre-IPO and reliant on Reg A+ retail funding with an unconfirmed IPO timeline.
- No proprietary tech or data moat; mechanic is trivially cloned and now legally constrained.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Snapchat/Instagram/Meta | losing to | Banned NGL and peers from Stories integrations in 2022, controls NGL's core distribution |
| LMK | contesting | Direct anonymous Q&A peer, same 2022 Snapchat integration ban |
| Sendit | contesting | Direct anonymous Q&A peer, same 2022 Snapchat integration ban |
| YOLO | contesting | Direct anonymous Q&A peer, same 2022 Snapchat integration ban |
- Is NGL still an independent company?
- No. NGL was acquired by Mode Mobile, the EarnPhone rewards startup, in a deal announced December 19, 2025 and confirmed via press release December 29, 2025. Both NGL co-founders, Raj Vir and Joao Figueiredo, departed, and only three NGL employees transferred to Mode Mobile.
- Was NGL's business model found illegal?
- Yes. In July 2024 the FTC and LA DA settled charges against NGL Labs for $5M, permanently banning it from marketing to under-18 users and from claiming its AI content moderation worked, after finding it used fake auto-generated messages to bait paid NGL Pro subscriptions.
- Can NGL users get a refund?
- The FTC opened a refund claims process for NGL Pro users charged without authorization on January 6, 2026, with a filing deadline of April 6, 2026. As of April 16, 2026 the FTC had closed new submissions and was reviewing filed claims.
- Who is NGL's biggest competitor threat?
- Snapchat and Instagram are the real threat since NGL depends entirely on their Stories integrations for distribution. Snapchat banned NGL along with peers LMK, Sendit, and YOLO from third-party Stories integrations in 2022 following litigation tied to a teen suicide.
- Could AI replace or worsen NGL's core mechanic?
- Generative AI makes NGL's penalized tactic, fake auto-generated messages meant to look like real anonymous senders, cheaper and easier to produce, which cuts against the company legally rather than helping it, given the FTC's July 2024 ban on that exact practice.
- Is joining NGL or Mode Mobile's NGL team a safe career move?
- NGL had only three employees left at the December 2025 acquisition, both founders exited, and the product is now a minor bolt-on inside pre-IPO Mode Mobile, which itself is raising money via Reg A+ retail offerings as of May 2026 with an unconfirmed 18-24 month IPO target.
