The call

Nichii's care business sits behind regulatory and labor barriers AI has not cleared, but its clerical arm faces automation while SOMPO Care moves faster on AI deployment.

Nichii Gakkan runs nursing homes and handles back-office paperwork for Japanese companies. Its nursing homes are hard to replace because Japan's government strictly licenses them, workers are scarce, and the hands-on care work cannot be automated quickly. However, the paperwork side of the business is becoming vulnerable to software and AI that can do the same clerical work faster and cheaper, and a rival called SOMPO Care is already using AI systems to handle paperwork and administrative tasks across hundreds of facilities. The question is whether profits from nursing homes will stay strong enough to make up for lost clerical work, or whether SOMPO Care's head start with AI will eventually let it squeeze Nichii out of both businesses.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ambient documentation and billing automation for medical/clerical outsourcing. AI reception and billing tools threaten to automate the medical-clerical business Nichii was founded on, while care work resists automation for now. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: SOMPO Care Inc.. SOMPO Care already runs a Palantir-backed AI platform called egaku across roughly 470 homes; Nichii is still piloting similar tools. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Long-term-care licensing rules, chronic caregiver shortages, and physical hands-on labor keep both AI and rivals from replacing the care business quickly.
What would change this call
SOMPO Care confirms egaku platform deployed across most of its ~470 care homes within a year. Would show SOMPO converting AI from pilot to scaled, margin-improving operation while Nichii lags.
Nichii's USEN-ALMEX medical-DX trial (5 hospitals, started Dec 2025) expands to a nationwide rollout. Would show Nichii's clerical-automation pilots converting to real deployment, narrowing the gap.
Japan's government announces the next long-term-care insurance fee revision and its rate direction. Would show whether sector-wide reimbursement cuts squeeze Nichii's core care margins.

Questions people ask
Is Nichii Gakkan still a publicly traded company?
No. Nichii Gakkan delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange after a 2020 management buyout backed by Bain Capital valued at roughly US$1.4 billion, and it remains private today under Nippon Life Insurance, which closed a 99.6% acquisition of Nichii Holdings in June 2024.
Who owns Nichii Gakkan now?
Nippon Life Insurance Company owns 99.6% of Nichii Holdings, the parent of Nichii Gakkan, after closing an approximately 210 billion yen (about US$1.41 billion) acquisition from Bain Capital-affiliated funds in June 2024.
Is Nichii Gakkan profitable?
Post-privatization financials are undisclosed. The last publicly reported standalone revenue figure is 268.9 billion yen for the fiscal year ended March 2023; no profit figures have been disclosed for FY2024 or FY2025 as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Nichii Gakkan's business?
Its founding medical-clerical outsourcing line is exposed, evidenced by a December 2025 joint AI trial with USEN-ALMEX across five hospitals. Its physical long-term-care business is protected for now since humanoid caregiving robots like Waseda's AIREC are not expected deployable until around 2030.
Who is Nichii Gakkan's biggest competitor?
SOMPO Care, a subsidiary of SOMPO Holdings, is the closest large rival, operating roughly 470 care homes and 640 at-home care facilities serving about 85,000 users as of early 2025, and running a Palantir-backed AI platform called egaku that Nichii has not matched at scale.
Is Nichii Gakkan laying off staff?
Headcount at the operating company declined modestly from 83,639 employees in March 2023 to 80,585 in March 2025, roughly a 3,000-person drop, consistent with Japan's chronic care-labor shortage rather than an announced mass layoff.
