The call

Nium's licenses keep it standing, but Airwallex is pulling ahead on volume and growth while Nium's IPO keeps slipping.

Nium is a company that moves money between countries for banks and businesses using real infrastructure, real licenses in 40+ places, and access to 100+ currencies. It is hard to replace because you need actual government permission and real banking connections to do this work, which takes years to build. However, four or five other companies, especially Airwallex, are already doing the same thing just as well or better. Airwallex moves three times more money and is growing faster, while Nium missed its own revenue goals in 2023 ($120 million instead of $160 to $180 million it promised) and had to cut its value down by 30 percent. The one thing that could change this is if Nium suddenly starts moving a lot more money than Airwallex and proves it can grow as fast, but that would need to happen by the end of 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents could automate payment routing someday, but the licensing and compliance work behind Nium's rails isn't something a model replicates. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Airwallex. Airwallex moves roughly $150B a year, about 3x Nium's volume, and is growing faster with a higher valuation. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 40+ money-transmitter licenses across 190+ countries give Nium regulatory cover new entrants can't buy quickly.
