The call

OneConnect now exists as a wholly owned, shrinking Ping An subsidiary with no public shareholders, no disclosed strategy, and steep, deliberate revenue pullback from its own parent.

OneConnect makes software that helps banks in Asia run their operations. Its parent company Ping An deliberately cut back on using OneConnect's services, which caused revenue to drop 43% in the first half of 2025. The company now faces two big threats: giant banking software makers like Temenos and Oracle that already serve thousands of banks worldwide, and new AI-powered competitors like Mambu that let banks build their own systems faster and cheaper. The one thing that could change this picture is if Ping An announces a new plan for OneConnect after it went private in November 2025, but so far management has said details will come later.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native core banking platforms like Mambu and Thought Machine, plus banks building in-house LLM tools. Banks increasingly build GenAI tools in-house or buy AI-native cores, cutting demand for OneConnect's legacy TaaS stack. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Temenos. Temenos already runs core banking for 41 of the top 50 banks by assets, competing directly for the same institutional clients. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Ping An still supplies some contracts and distribution, though the parent is actively withdrawing that business, not expanding it.
What would change this call
Ping An issues a post-privatization strategy statement for OneConnect. Shows whether OneConnect is a strategic bet or a cost center being wound down.
Ping An's next annual report discloses OneConnect segment revenue trends. Reveals whether third-party revenue keeps shrinking after delisting opacity.
Third-party (non-Ping An) revenue growth for 2+ consecutive quarters. Would indicate independent viability beyond captive parent demand.

Questions people ask
Is OneConnect in financial trouble?
Yes, by the numbers. Revenue fell from RMB4.46B in FY2020 to RMB433.4M in Q2 2025 alone, a 37% year-over-year drop for that quarter, and the company was valued at just $217M when taken private in December 2025, down from a $7.4B valuation in 2018. Full-time headcount also fell 20.6% year over year to 1,937 by end of 2024.
Is OneConnect at risk from AI?
Yes, the AI threat is marked as shipped and likely to lead to replacement of its offerings. Cheap, generic large language model tools from Ant Group, Tencent, and open models like DeepSeek and Qwen are commoditizing the AI wrapper products OneConnect sells to banks and insurers. Our July 2026 assessment found little protecting OneConnect's AI-related offerings from this commoditization.
Who are OneConnect's biggest competitors?
Its main competitors are Ant Group and Tencent, both of which offer larger, cheaper, bundled fintech and AI platforms, plus in-house tech units at state banks like ICBC and CCB that increasingly build their own tools instead of buying from OneConnect. Within the A5 fintech infrastructure category, OneConnect sits far behind these rivals in ecosystem scale as of the July 2026 assessment.
Does OneConnect have any competitive advantages left?
Its main remaining edge is captive contract flow from parent Ping An's insurance and banking arms, not any pricing power or proprietary technology. Our July 2026 assessment found independent protection thin across the board, since clients face few switching costs and OneConnect has little proprietary lock-in versus outside competitors like Ant Group and Tencent.
What should I watch to see if OneConnect turns around?
Two dated markers are worth tracking. First, whether Ping An discloses a standalone reinvestment or growth plan for OneConnect by December 2026, following the take-private deal completed in December 2025. Second, whether OneConnect's HKMA GenAI Sandbox anti-fraud platform converts into a licensed product with reported adoption metrics by mid-2027.
