The call

OpenRouter built real usage and drew a possible $10B buyer, but it sits between zero-markup rivals and cloud platforms that already ship the same routing for free.

OpenRouter is a middleman service that lets app makers use different AI models through one connection, taking a small fee (about 5%) on each request. It's somewhat hard to replace because it has built up real data about which models work best and has 250K apps already connected to it. But Google, Amazon, and Microsoft now offer similar routing built into their own cloud services for free, and Vercel and Cloudflare are offering free gateways too, which means OpenRouter's main way of making money, charging that small 5% fee, is under real attack. The company could survive if it stops selling just cheap routing and instead sells more valuable tools like security checks, cost controls, or features big companies need, which would let it charge more than competitors who stay free.

Why
01
AI pressure: Vercel AI Gateway, Cloudflare AI Gateway. Both offer zero-markup multi-model routing today, attacking the 5-5.5% fee that funds OpenRouter's business. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry, Google Vertex. Cloud giants now bundle native multi-model routing into existing cloud contracts, cutting the reason to add a separate layer. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 8M developers and 250,000 apps already wired into its API, plus a public leaderboard and token-volume data rivals cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
OpenRouter's take rate stays near 5% through 2027 versus Vercel/Cloudflare at zero. Shows whether its data and liquidity moat gives real pricing power or forces a price war.
OpenRouter launches enterprise governance SKUs (budget controls, DLP, prompt-injection defense) within 2-3 quarters. Shows whether it can decouple revenue from commodity inference volume.
Stripe's roughly $10B acquisition talks close, collapse, or Databricks' rival bid wins. Shows whether OpenRouter's near-term outcome is acquisition rather than independent competition.
Key numbers
  • $113M Series B at ~$1.3B valuation, led by CapitalG (2026-05-26)
  • 8M developers, 250K+ apps, ~25T tokens/week (2026-05)
  • Stripe in talks to buy OpenRouter for ~$10B (2026-07-27)
Named risks
  • Zero-markup rivals Vercel and Cloudflare directly erode OpenRouter's 5 to 5.5 percent take-rate model. Severity: high
  • Cloud incumbents AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud could bundle native routing and bypass OpenRouter entirely. Severity: high
  • Stripe acquisition talks could collapse or be outbid, leaving valuation and strategy in limbo. Severity: medium
  • Foundation labs like OpenAI or Anthropic could restrict third-party routing access or undercut pricing directly. Severity: medium
  • Headcount and financial data remain unverified estimates, obscuring true operational scale. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is OpenRouter profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figures exist. Sacra estimated OpenRouter's annualized revenue reached about $50M by March 2026, built on a roughly 5 percent take rate on inference spend, but no audited financials or profit figures have been disclosed by the company.
Who might acquire OpenRouter?
As of July 27, 2026, Stripe was reportedly in talks to buy OpenRouter for roughly $10 billion, nearly 8x its May 2026 valuation of $1.3B, with Databricks said to have separately made its own competing bid, per eWeek and WSJ reporting.
Could AI or cloud giants replace OpenRouter?
AWS Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry, and Google Vertex already ship native multi-model routing, and Vercel and Cloudflare offer zero-markup AI gateways as of July 2026, directly pressuring OpenRouter's 5 to 5.5 percent take-rate business model.
Who is OpenRouter's biggest competitor?
Direct rivals include Portkey, LiteLLM, Vercel AI Gateway, and Cloudflare AI Gateway; cloud incumbents AWS Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry, and Google Vertex pose the deepest threat since they already bundle native model routing as of May 2026.
How much funding has OpenRouter raised?
OpenRouter raised a $12.5M seed in February 2025 led by a16z, a $28M Series A in April 2025 led by Menlo Ventures at ~$500M valuation, and a $113M Series B on May 26, 2026 led by CapitalG at a ~$1.3B post-money valuation.
How big is OpenRouter's team?
Headcount estimates conflict: LinkedIn listed about 80 employees in June 2026, Datanyze listed 45, and a July 2026 fintech newsletter described it as a company of a few dozen people, suggesting a range of roughly 40 to 80 staff.
