The call

Optimism's code runs much of the Superchain, but its biggest tenant is walking out the door, and the toll it collects from everyone else barely covers the lights.

Optimism built software that lets other companies run their own blockchains faster and cheaper than doing it alone. Many teams use Optimism's playbook, including a huge customer called Base that generates most of Optimism's money. In early 2026, Base announced it would stop using Optimism's technology and build its own instead, which cuts Optimism's income by over two-thirds. The company makes very little profit ($17 million in 2025) and hasn't raised new money in years, so it can survive but is under real pressure. The one thing that matters most: if other big customers like Unichain or Ink follow Base out the door, Optimism's economic model could crack open.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents don't directly threaten blockchain settlement infrastructure; this is a crypto rollup economics problem, not an AI one. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase's Base. Base made 71% of 2025 Superchain revenue but paid the Collective only 2.5% of its gross take, and in Feb 2026 said it's leaving for its own stack. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. OP Stack is the shared code standard other chains (Unichain, Ink, World Chain, Soneium) already run on, making a clean break costly for them too.
What would change this call
Base's revenue-share payments to the Optimism Collective over the next 2-3 quarters. Shows whether the exit actually guts Collective income or is offset by other tenants.
Whether Unichain, Ink, World Chain, or Soneium announce their own exits to independent stacks. Shows if Base's move triggers a broader Superchain tenant exodus.
Whether monthly Collective sequencer revenue falls below the $200k buyback-pause floor. A public trigger showing the economic base funding OP buybacks is breaking.
Key numbers
  • Base made 71% of 2025 Superchain sequencer revenue (2025-12-31)
  • Total 2025 Collective revenue: $17.3M (5,868 ETH) (2025-12-31)
  • OP Labs cut 20% of staff (~20 people) in restructuring (2026-03-12)
Named risks
  • Base's exit to an independent stack could collapse Superchain sequencer revenue given its 71% 2025 share. Severity: high
  • OP buyback program auto-pauses if monthly Collective revenue drops below $200,000. Severity: medium
  • OP token down 83% year over year as of July 2026, with more team and investor tokens still vesting. Severity: medium
  • No new equity round since March 2022, leaving OP Labs reliant on Collective treasury funding. Severity: medium
  • Pending US crypto regulation (CLARITY Act, SEC token guidance) could reshape OP token's legal treatment. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Optimism profitable in 2026?
Optimism's Collective earned only about $17.3 million in total 2025 protocol revenue, and OP Labs cut 20% of staff in March 2026 after Base, its top revenue source, announced plans to leave for an independent tech stack. No profit figures have been disclosed; the model runs on thin sequencer fees, not conventional profit.
Is Optimism losing Coinbase's Base as a partner?
Yes. In February 2026, Coinbase's Base, which generated about 71% of all 2025 Superchain sequencer revenue, announced it is moving to its own independent tech stack, prompting OP Labs to cut 20% of staff in March 2026 due to reduced shared revenue.
Is the OP token a good investment right now?
As of July 28, 2026, OP traded down about 83% year over year with a market cap near $200 to $250 million, per CoinGecko. A 31.34 million token unlock on January 31, 2026 and a revenue-linked buyback that pauses below $200,000 monthly add further price risk.
Who owns Optimism?
Optimism is privately held, split between OP Labs PBC and the nonprofit Optimism Foundation. Its last equity round was a $150 million Series B led by a16z at a $1.65 billion valuation in March 2022; no new equity round has been reported since.
Could AI replace Optimism's blockchain infrastructure?
No direct AI substitution threat exists for Optimism's core product, blockchain settlement and rollup infrastructure, as of mid 2026. AI could commoditize adjacent smart contract development and dev tooling work OP Labs funds, and OP Labs itself was hiring an AI Lead Engineer as of early 2026.
Who is Optimism's biggest competitor?
Arbitrum leads Ethereum Layer 2 activity and Coinbase's Base, formerly an OP Stack partner contributing 71% of 2025 Superchain sequencer revenue, announced in February 2026 it is leaving for its own independent stack, directly threatening Optimism's revenue base.
