The call

Orange sits on physical infrastructure and licenses that AI and satellite rivals cannot copy, while its enterprise IT arm is the one segment already losing ground.

Orange runs France's main telephone and internet networks using buried fiber and copper cables, plus owns radio frequencies the government licenses. No competitor can build equivalent physical infrastructure or get those same frequencies, and the French government owns part of the company, which adds protection. The real question is whether Orange can grow its business services division back to health and actually replace customer service workers with AI as planned by 2028, or whether those remain expensive to run.

Why
01
AI pressure: Cloud and AI-services rivals (AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud) pulling enterprise IT spend away from Orange Business. AI-driven cloud and IT-ops tools let big tech sell enterprise services Orange Business used to own, which fell 4.8% in 2025. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Starlink and other satellite broadband providers. Satellite internet is starting to compete for rural and edge-of-network customers where fiber rollout is slow or costly. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owns the physical network, licensed spectrum, and submarine cables that no software company or satellite operator can replicate quickly, plus 23% French state ownership.
