The call

OrCam's original product category was erased by phone-based AI, and its hearing-device pivot is still unsold while investors fight founders over money.

OrCam made AI glasses that read text aloud to blind users, but smartphone cameras with AI did the same thing for free, so the founders killed that business in 2024. They switched to making earbuds that isolate voices in noisy rooms, but the product still makes no money after three years, and it is trying to compete against Apple's AirPods Pro, Jabra hearing aids, and five other companies that already own hospitals and doctor relationships that steer customers to them. The company ran out of cash, fired 90 percent of its staff, and now its biggest investors are publicly fighting the founders over how much the company is worth, which stopped them from raising new money and forced them to beg for a 2 million dollar emergency loan in March 2025. The one thing that could save it: if the investor fight ends in a deal that funds a real launch, and if doctors start prescribing OrCam earbuds instead of the hearing aid brands they have always sold.

Why
01
AI pressure: Smartphone LLM image apps (Be My AI, Seeing AI, generic multimodal assistants). Free LLM camera apps on any phone now read text and describe scenes, killing demand for OrCam's paid vision devices. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Apple AirPods Pro (FDA-cleared OTC hearing aid) and GN Jabra Enhance Pro 30. Apple and Jabra already sell hearing assistance in stores while OrCam Hear, shown at CES 2024, still has no launch date. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Founders personally injected cash to keep the lights on, but that buys time, not a product on shelves or a market position.

Questions people ask
Is OrCam Technologies profitable in 2026?
No indication of profitability. OrCam's revenue fell from $45-50M in 2023 to $16M in 2024 per Globes (2025-03-13), and its sole current product, OrCam Hear, was still pre-revenue as of March 2025 despite three years of development.
Has OrCam Technologies had layoffs?
Yes, repeatedly. OrCam cut staff in four rounds between October 2022 and July 2024 (62, 50, 100, and a final round), shrinking headcount from 400+ at peak to fewer than 50 employees by March 2025, per Wikipedia (2026-07-07) and Calcalist.
Could AI replace OrCam's products?
It already has. OrCam discontinued its entire vision-device line (MyEye, Read, Learn) in 2024, stating that LLM-based image processing on smartphones made further development unnecessary, per Wikipedia and Globes (2024-07-28).
Who owns OrCam Technologies?
OrCam was founded in 2010 by Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram, also Mobileye co-founders. It remains private and Israel-based; as of March 2025 founders were in a public dispute with institutional investors Clal, Harel, Leumi and Meitav over SAFE conversion terms.
Is OrCam Hear available to buy yet?
No. OrCam Hear was unveiled as a technology preview at CES 2024 in January 2024 and won a CES Editors' Choice award, but as of March 2025, per Calcalist, it had generated no revenue and had no confirmed shipping date or price.
Who is OrCam's biggest competitor?
In hearing technology, OrCam faces Apple, whose AirPods Pro carry FDA-cleared OTC hearing-aid functionality (reviewed 2026-07-20), plus Jabra, whose Enhance Pro 30 AI-chip hearing aid launched at Costco in May 2025, ahead of any OrCam Hear commercial launch.
