The call

Origin Quantum has state protection and real hardware, but its $3B price tag rests on quantum demand and a domestic IPO race that haven't been decided yet.

Origin Quantum builds quantum computers and software in China, with real products already shipped to customers. Western companies like IBM and Google cannot sell quantum systems to Chinese government agencies due to US export rules, which gives Origin a protected home market. The big question is whether quantum computers will actually become useful and profitable in the next few years: right now the entire world quantum industry loses far more money than it makes, Origin is burning through cash, and a rival Chinese company called Guoyi Quantum might go public first and capture more government investment. If demand stays weak or if US materials restrictions cut off Origin's supply chains, the company could survive on government support but never deliver real returns to investors.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nvidia CUDA-Q and GPU-based classical quantum simulators. Better classical AI simulators keep shrinking the workloads where quantum beats a GPU, delaying paid demand. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Guoyi Quantum. Domestic superconducting rival got STAR Market IPO approval first and could grab state capital mindshare before Origin lists. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Chinese export controls and national-security procurement rules keep IBM, Google, IonQ, and Quantinuum out of its home market entirely.
What would change this call
Whether Guoyi Quantum completes its STAR Market IPO before Origin Quantum files or lists. Would show Guoyi capturing state capital mindshare as China's superconducting standard first.
Whether Origin Quantum's paid commercial revenue rises materially above the ~$14M baseline in 2026-2027 filings. Would show real commercial demand beyond free cloud-visit usage.
Whether Bose Quantum or 中科酷原 announce new paid institutional deployments beyond pilot shipments in 2026. Would show domestic competitors converting hardware ships into commercial adoption.
Key numbers
  • Pre-IPO round: ~$410M led by Norinco (2026-06-28)
  • Revenue ~$14M vs losses ~$34M (2026-05-27)
  • Qubit count: 72 in 2024, 1,000 by 2026 (2026-06-28)
Named risks
  • Valuation of $3B+ against roughly $14M revenue and $34M losses as of May 2026. Severity: high
  • On US Commerce Entity List since May 2024, restricting access to US-origin quantum components. Severity: high
  • Domestic rival Guoyi Quantum approved for STAR Market IPO first, in May 2026, risking mindshare loss. Severity: medium
  • Sector-wide quantum winter, dedicated labs lost ~$1B against ~$190M revenue globally in 2025. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Origin Quantum profitable?
No. As of May 2026, a third-party analyst estimate puts Origin Quantum's annual revenue at roughly $14 million against operating losses of about $34 million, a gap the company has not confirmed but which stands against a valuation near $3 billion.
Who owns Origin Quantum and is it state-backed?
Origin Quantum is privately held and almost entirely funded by Chinese state-linked investors. Its June 2026 pre-IPO round of nearly 3 billion RMB (about $410 million) was led by China North Industries Group, a state defense conglomerate, pushing valuation to roughly $3.0 to 3.3 billion.
Could AI replace Origin Quantum?
Unlikely. Origin Quantum builds physical quantum hardware, chips, dilution refrigerators, and control electronics, work AI cannot substitute. It instead markets quantum computing as complementary to AI, with its free Origin Pilot OS (released February 26, 2026) orchestrating quantum and AI/HPC resources together.
Who is Origin Quantum's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Guoyi Quantum, whose STAR Market IPO application was approved in May 2026, is racing to list first as China's superconducting national champion. Globally, IonQ topped $100 million in annual GAAP revenue by February 2026, far ahead of Origin's roughly $14 million.
When will Origin Quantum go public?
Origin Quantum began STAR Market IPO counseling in September 2025. China's June 18, 2026 STAR Market reform expanded pre-profit listing rules to quantum technology, and peer Guoyi Quantum moved from application to approval in about 153 days, suggesting a listing could arrive within roughly six to twelve months.
How many qubits does Origin Quantum's computer have?
Origin Quantum's flagship Wukong system launched in January 2024 with a 72-qubit superconducting chip. By 2026 the company had shipped a newer superconducting system reported at 1,000 qubits, as of a June 28, 2026 report.
