The call

OVO went from Indonesia's top wallet to a single-digit also-ran, now being repointed at feeding Grab's Superbank lending business instead of competing head-on for consumer wallet share.

OVO was Indonesia's biggest digital wallet in 2021 but has lost most users to ShopeePay, which is now the market leader with strong appeal to younger customers. OVO is now mostly owned by Grab (the ride-sharing company) and being turned into a behind-the-scenes tool for Grab's lending business instead of a wallet people use on its own. The company faces two questions: whether Grab will keep OVO as a visible brand for regular customers or hide it in the background, and whether ShopeePay's connection to the huge Shopee shopping app will lock in young users before OVO can bounce back.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product is named eating OVO directly; its own transaction data instead feeds Grab's Superbank credit-scoring engine. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: ShopeePay (Sea Group). OVO fell from ~38% wallet share in 2021 to 8% top-of-mind recall by Feb 2026, while ShopeePay took 41% and 88% of Gen Z. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Grab's 90% stake folds OVO into Superbank's lending pipes, giving it a job as data and distribution layer even if consumer usage keeps sliding.
What would change this call
2026-2027 Ipsos wallet survey shows OVO recall below or above the Feb 2026 8% mark. Confirms whether OVO's share loss to ShopeePay is continuing or stabilizing.
Grab issues a formal roadmap naming OVO as Superbank's consumer-facing brand or as backend plumbing only. Shows whether OVO survives as a consumer wallet or is absorbed into Grab's lending infrastructure.
OVO announces a new external funding round or updated valuation mark. Would indicate renewed investor confidence after no funding since 2021.

Questions people ask
Is OVO still Indonesia's top e-wallet in 2026?
No. OVO led with roughly 38% share in 2021, but by February 2026 Ipsos data shows OVO has just 8% top-of-mind recall in Indonesia, far behind ShopeePay at 41%, Dana at 26%, and GoPay at 23%.
Who owns OVO?
Grab holds roughly 90% of OVO as of an October 2021 deal that bought out Tokopedia's and Lippo Group's stakes, valuing OVO at about $2 billion. Local investors hold the remainder to satisfy Indonesian foreign-ownership rules, per an August 2022 Wikipedia-sourced status update.
Is OVO losing to ShopeePay?
Yes. Per Ipsos's February 2026 Indonesian e-wallet study, ShopeePay dominates with 88% Gen Z usage and 41% top-of-mind recall, while OVO trails at 47% Gen Z usage and just 8% recall, a steep drop from its 2021 market-leading position.
Could AI replace OVO's core payment business?
OVO's basic wallet and transaction-matching functions face erosion from QRIS, Indonesia's shared national QR standard that Grab integrated across its app by November 2025, reducing wallet-specific lock-in regardless of AI, though OVO's e-money license and Grab data remain harder to replicate.
Is OVO raising new funding in 2026?
No new external funding round for OVO has been reported since Grab's October 2021 stake increase to 90%. Instead, as of June 2026, Grab is consolidating Superbank into its financial-services segment, using the OVO ecosystem for distribution rather than raising fresh capital for OVO itself.
What is OVO's biggest competitor?
ShopeePay is OVO's biggest threat as of February 2026, per Ipsos data showing it leads Indonesian top-of-mind recall at 41% versus OVO's 8%, and captures 88% of Gen Z usage versus OVO's 47%, having overtaken OVO's former #1 position from 2021.
