The call

PAX still ships more terminals than almost anyone, but a 2021 FBI probe, a fresh Hong Kong delisting, and phones that double as terminals are all pressing on it at once.

PAX Technology builds the checkout machines that stores use to process card payments. It has sold millions of these machines worldwide over two decades and has strong relationships with banks and payment processors, which makes it hard for new competitors to break in quickly. However, three things are eating away at the business: smartphones can now process payments directly (no machine needed), pushing down prices and sales; an FBI investigation from 2021 has already scared away some major customers; and the company is moving its stock listing away from Hong Kong, which suggests it may be shrinking or preparing to be bought out. The real question is whether the company can defend its installed base while phones take over simpler transactions and until the legal cloud lifts.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI doesn't replace certified payment hardware, but PAX is using AI in its own PAXSTORE device-management software to stay useful to banks. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Stripe, Square, Adyen, Toast (softPOS turning phones into terminals). SoftPOS lets a phone act as a terminal, and PAX's own gross margin already dropped 360 basis points as hardware prices get squeezed. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 16 million terminals already running its software, plus 20+ years of bank certifications that are slow and costly to redo.

Questions people ask
Is PAX Technology profitable in 2026?
Yes. PAX Global Technology reported FY2025 net profit of USD $96.5-97.2 million, up about 5% year over year, with a 12.9% net margin, per its annual results announcement dated 2026-03-27.
Did PAX Technology get delisted from the Hong Kong stock exchange?
Yes. PAX Global Technology voluntarily withdrew from HKEX, with its last trading day on 2026-01-08 and delisting effective 2026-01-14; shares now trade solely on SGX under code PCT.
Who are PAX Technology's biggest competitors?
Direct hardware rivals include Verifone, Ingenico (Worldline), Newland, Nexgo, Castles Technology, SZZT Electronics, Dejavoo and Valor PayTech, per a 2026-05-12 industry comparison; softPOS players like Stripe, Adyen and Square pressure it from the software side.
Is PAX Technology a safe company to join in 2026?
Mixed signals: group headcount fell about 14.8% to roughly 1,509 employees by end-2024 and stayed near 1,500 through mid-2025, gross margin compressed about 360 basis points in FY2025, and no final dividend was declared, per company and Quartr data (2026-07-05).
Could AI replace PAX Technology's core business?
Unlikely for hardware itself, since AI cannot 3D-print certified payment terminals, but AI-driven softPOS and analytics are eroding PAX's device-management and hardware ASP margins; PAX itself began integrating AI into its PAXSTORE platform per its FY2025 results (2026-03-27).
What happened with the FBI investigation into PAX Technology?
A 2021 FBI/DHS investigation into PAX's US terminals led Worldpay/FIS to drop PAX terminals that year; as of PAX's own 2023-02-13 statement, no charges had been filed and the matter's status remained unresolved.
