Payactiv
Payactiv lets hourly workers pull earned wages early via employer payroll links.
Payactiv still runs a profitable, license-backed EWA business, but bigger payroll platforms and neobanks are closing in on the distribution it pioneered.
Payactiv pioneered a service that lets employees borrow against wages they've already earned, and it stays profitable because it has state licenses, connections to payroll systems, and relationships with employers that are hard to replicate quickly. But the service has become ordinary: eight out of ten workers can access it somewhere, only one out of ten actually use it, and DailyPay is two to three times larger. The real threat is that giant payroll companies like ADP, Workday, and SAP are now building the same feature directly into their own software, which means Payactiv could lose customers without ever failing as a business. The one thing that could turn this around is if those big platforms decide the feature is too risky or complicated to run themselves and instead stick with Payactiv as their vendor, but that's unlikely given their size and ability to do it alone.
Payactiv's minority-stake sale closes and a valuation figure is reported. A figure below 2020's $500M would show investor confidence has fallen since the last raise.
The Earned Wage Access Consumer Protection Act passes or fails in the Senate. Passage would lock in favorable rules for Payactiv; failure leaves state-by-state risk open.
- ~2M users, $5B cumulative wages facilitated
- $100M Series C at ~$500M valuation
- ~$63M estimated annual revenue
- Ongoing federal and state litigation over 2025 data breach exposing 202,192 SSNs.
- Major payroll platforms (Workday, ADP, SAP) could go native and disintermediate Payactiv.
- No priced funding round since 2020; 2024 minority stake sale remains unresolved.
- Industry-wide EWA engagement plateau, only about 10% of workers with access use it frequently.
- Favorable CFPB stance on EWA-as-not-credit could reverse without permanent rule or federal law.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DailyPay | losing to | Reported 2 to 3 times larger in scale than Payactiv as of 2026 per analysis |
| Chime | contesting | Chime's direct-to-consumer EWA hit $8.8B in transactions in first 9 months, disclosed Dec 2025 |
| Workday | gaining on | Payactiv added Workday integration July 2025, but native EWA by Workday could displace it |
| SAP | gaining on | Payactiv listed on SAP Store Dec 2025, exposing it to SAP building native EWA later |
| ADP, Paychex | contesting | Payactiv integrates with 70+ payroll systems including ADP, Paychex as of 2026, but they could build native features |
- Is Payactiv profitable in 2026?
- Fortune reported Payactiv was profitable as of May 21, 2024, while it was exploring a sale of a minority stake. No newer public financials have surfaced, and no funding round has closed since its 2020 Series C, consistent with a mature, cash-flow-focused private fintech rather than a loss-making startup.
- Who owns Payactiv?
- Payactiv is privately held and venture-backed. Its last priced round was a $100M Series C on August 13, 2020, led by Todd Boehly's Eldridge Industries with Generation Partners and Ziegler Link-Age Funds, valuing the company at over $500M. No new investor has been confirmed since.
- Is Payactiv bigger than DailyPay?
- No. Per the underlying analysis, DailyPay is roughly 2 to 3 times larger than Payactiv in scale as of 2026, and Payactiv is now considered a second-tier player behind DailyPay despite pioneering earned wage access back in 2012.
- Could AI replace Payactiv?
- Not directly. Payactiv's moat rests on state EWA licenses, payroll integrations (Workday added July 2025, SAP Store December 2025), and employer relationships like Walmart since 2017, not on AI models. But a July 15, 2026 PYMNTS report found only about 10% of workers with EWA access use it frequently, showing engagement, not AI, is its real challenge.
- Did Payactiv have a data breach?
- Yes. A cybersecurity incident between April 3 and August 20, 2025 exposed names and Social Security numbers of 202,192 individuals. Federal litigation was consolidated in the Northern District of California (Case No. 5:25-cv-08476), and a Florida settlement offering up to $2,500 per claimant was announced July 16, 2026.
- What is the biggest threat to Payactiv's business?
- Major payroll and HR platforms, ADP, Paychex, Workday, and SAP, are embedding earned wage access natively or via deep integrations (Workday, July 2025; SAP Store, December 2025). If they go fully native and cut Payactiv out, its core distribution moat could invert into a dependency.
