The call

Paycom still holds clients tightly through compliance and one database, but growth is slowing and Rippling is taking the newer, faster-growing accounts.

Paycom sells human resources and payroll software to mid-size companies, storing all customer data in a single database that makes it hard for customers to switch without losing tax records and compliance history. The company's real problem is that Rippling, a newer competitor, is winning customers with better software and faster service, while Paycom's own cost-cutting automation tools are shrinking the fees it used to charge, which has slowed growth from over 9 percent to around 6 or 7 percent and triggered a lawsuit. If Rippling keeps grabbing market share or if Paycom loses the pending lawsuit, the company's ability to stay competitive will be tested in the next six months.

Why
01
AI pressure: Rippling. Rippling's modern, AI-assisted stack scores higher on user sentiment and wins new logos, while Paycom's own automation tools cut its fee revenue. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Workday. Workday pushes deeper into large-enterprise HCM and analytics, an area where it already outscores Paycom, squeezing Paycom's move upmarket. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Tax filing, ADA and EEOC compliance work lives inside Paycom's system, so ripping it out carries real legal risk for clients.
What would change this call
Paycom's annual retention rate drops below 88% in a future quarterly/annual report. Would show customers are actually leaving for rivals like Rippling, not just fee erosion.
FY2026 revenue guidance (6-7%) is cut again in a future earnings release. Would show growth deceleration is worsening, not stabilizing.
Motion-to-dismiss ruling in Case No. 23-cv-01019 (W.D. Okla.) is issued. Would clarify whether litigation over the automation/growth-slowdown narrative proceeds or is dismissed.

Questions people ask
Is Paycom profitable in 2026?
Paycom remains revenue-growing and debt-free, reporting FY2025 revenue of $2,051.7 million (up 9.0% YoY) and carrying zero total debt as of December 31, 2025 and March 31, 2026, though FY2026 guidance of 6-7% growth undershot analyst expectations, per Paycom's Feb 11, 2026 earnings release.
Is Paycom laying off employees?
Yes. Paycom's own reported headcount fell to 5,770 employees at end of 2025, down 21% from 7,306 a year earlier, a drop of over 1,500 staff even as revenue grew about 9%, according to stockanalysis.com data dated 2026-07-20.
Could AI replace Paycom's software?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Paycom's single-database HCM architecture and payroll tax/compliance liability create switching costs generic AI cannot easily substitute, but Paycom's own AI tools (Beti, GONE, IWant, launched 2025-07-30) are already cannibalizing its historical correction-fee revenue internally.
Who is Paycom's biggest competitor?
Rippling and Workday are the sharpest threats: SelectHub data from 2026-03-03 shows Rippling's user-sentiment score at 95 versus Paycom's 85, while incumbent ADP still holds roughly 30% of the midsize payroll market with 810,000 customers, per a 2026-06-20 industry estimate.
Who owns Paycom Software?
Paycom is an independent public company on the NYSE (ticker PAYC), founder-led by CEO and chairman Chad Richison, who founded the company in 1998; no acquisition or take-private activity has occurred as of the company's 2026-02-11 earnings report.
Why did Paycom's stock drop in 2026?
Paycom shares fell 7.9% in a single day on February 11, 2026 after FY2026 guidance of $2.175-2.195 billion (6-7% growth) missed analyst consensus of about $2.23 billion, and the stock remains roughly 50% below its 52-week high as of mid-2026.
