PayIt
PayIt runs digital payment and service portals for state and local governments.
PayIt's compliance and integration setup keeps AI newcomers out, but Tyler Technologies already competes on the same ground at far greater scale.
PayIt is a payment processor that helps state and local governments collect taxes, fees, and fines online. It is hard for artificial intelligence chatbots or new startups to replace because PayIt has expensive certifications (PCI-DSS Level 1, SOC 1/2, AWS GovCloud) and deep connections wired into old government computer systems that would take years to untangle. However, Tyler Technologies, which bought a larger competitor called NIC for $2.3 billion specifically to own government payments, is already doing the exact same thing at ten times PayIt's size and with the same legal protections, so PayIt faces a better-armed rival with more resources and existing relationships. The biggest question is whether Tyler will win most of the contracts that governments put up for bid over the next year or so.
Toronto Auditor General follow-up report due April 2026 and any procurement scrutiny it triggers elsewhere. Would show whether the Toronto issue spreads to other jurisdictions' vendor due diligence.
PayIt headcount trend reported after June 2026 (currently down 13.9% YoY). Continued decline vs reversal signals momentum or contraction in the business.
- $100M+ Series B led by Insight Partners
- $90M growth round from Macquarie Capital
- Serves 150M+ residents across North America
- Toronto Auditor General's April 17, 2026 report could trigger due-diligence scrutiny in other jurisdictions.
- Headcount contracted 13.9% YoY to 211 by June 2026 per third-party tracking.
- No disclosed audited revenue leaves financial health and scale unverifiable.
- Tyler Technologies competes at roughly 10x revenue scale with same compliance credentials.
- Newly launched Smart Works AI suite (June 2026) has no independently verified customer outcomes yet.

| Accela | contesting | Permitting-focused peer named in PayIt competitor set, per Pitchbook 2026 profile |
- Is PayIt profitable in 2026?
- PayIt has never disclosed audited revenue or profit figures. As of the July 14, 2026 fintechobserver brief, only unverified third-party estimates exist, and PayIt itself only reports scale metrics like serving 150M+ residents, not financial performance.
- Could AI replace PayIt?
- Unlikely soon. PayIt's moat is regulatory: PayFac status, PCI-DSS Level 1, SOC 1/2, and deep legacy government system integrations. PayIt is deploying AI itself, launching the Smart Works suite on June 16, 2026, as a product feature rather than being displaced by outside AI.
- Who owns PayIt?
- PayIt is privately held, backed by Insight Partners, Weatherford Capital, and Macquarie Capital Principal Finance, which led a $90M growth investment on August 4, 2022. No valuation or IPO has ever been publicly disclosed.
- Who is PayIt's biggest competitor?
- Tyler Technologies, which paid $2.3B to acquire NIC Inc in April 2021 specifically to enter government digital payments. Tyler reported roughly $2.14-2.3B in annual revenue for 2024-2025, dwarfing PayIt's much smaller scale.
- What happened between PayIt and the City of Toronto?
- MyToronto Pay was decommissioned on June 2, 2025 after a 2024 Auditor General audit found limited realized savings. A follow-up investigation report dated April 17, 2026 found policy and by-law violations in the original procurement.
- Is PayIt planning to raise more money or go public?
- No IPO or new funding round has been announced. PayIt has raised roughly $195M+ across three disclosed rounds since 2016, most recently $90M from Macquarie Capital in August 2022; appointing CFO Steve Kovzan in July 2025 may signal future fundraising prep.
