Paytm
Indian digital payments company running UPI, merchant devices, and lending distribution.
Paytm turned profitable and holds real merchant distribution, but sits a distant third in UPI behind a much larger PhonePe with regulatory risk still unresolved.
Paytm lets Indians pay bills, transfer money, and get loans through its app and merchant devices, and it just turned profitable for the full year. The problem is that PhonePe, which is owned by Walmart and has nearly half of India's payment traffic, can copy everything Paytm does and is already doing it, leaving Paytm stuck in third place with slow growth. The one thing that could change everything is a rule that limits any single payment app to 30% of transactions in India, which could force customers to use smaller apps like Paytm instead of always using PhonePe, but the government keeps delaying this rule and might not enforce it.
Paytm's UPI share crosses or fails to cross ~10% by mid-2027. Shows whether Paytm's device/lending moat is converting into real UPI volume gains.
SEBI resolves or escalates the founder promoter-classification and ESOP show-cause matter. Indicates whether governance/regulatory overhang is lifting or worsening.
- Q1 FY27 net profit ₹220 crore, up 79% YoY
- UPI share 7.9-8.1%, versus PhonePe's 46%
- Payments Bank license cancelled by RBI
- SEBI scrutiny over founder's promoter classification and ESOP allocation remains unresolved as of mid-2026.
- Regulatory fragility shown by RBI's April 2026 cancellation of Paytm Payments Bank's license.
- Thin core UPI economics due to near-zero MDR policy limits monetization of largest transaction volume.
- PhonePe and Google Pay scale and capital could widen their merchant/lending lead over Paytm.
- Concurrent AI-driven hiring (4,000) and layoffs (400) create execution and cost-line volatility risk.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |

| Razorpay, Pine Labs, Cashfree, PayU | gaining on | These rivals already held full PA licenses before Paytm's PPSL restoration in Nov-Dec 2025 |
- Is Paytm profitable in 2026?
- Yes. In Q1 FY27 (quarter ended June 2026), parent One97 Communications reported net profit of Rs 220 crore, up 79% YoY, its fifth straight profitable quarter after FY26's first-ever full-year profit. Revenue hit Rs 2,448 crore, up 28% YoY, reported July 20, 2026.
- Who owns Paytm?
- Paytm trades publicly as One97 Communications on India's NSE/BSE. Founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma held about 19.3% as of January 2026, Elevation Capital about 15.4% as of June 2025, and domestic Indian investors reached a majority 51.6% stake for the quarter ended June 2026.
- Could AI replace Paytm?
- Not its licensed core. Paytm's moat rests on RBI Payment Aggregator licenses restored in November-December 2025, 1.57 crore merchant devices, and proprietary transaction data feeding lending. Management credits AI for margin expansion and operating leverage in Q1 FY27, reported July 20, 2026, but as a tool, not a replacement.
- Who is Paytm's biggest competitor?
- PhonePe, the Walmart-backed leader with about 46% of India's UPI volume as of May 2026, dwarfing Paytm's roughly 7.9-8.1% share as distant third behind Google Pay's near 33%, per data reported July 19, 2026.
- Is Paytm gaining UPI market share?
- Slowly. Paytm's UPI volume share rose from about 6.8% to roughly 7.9-8.1% year over year as of May-June 2026, as the PhonePe-Google Pay duopoly slipped below 80% combined share for the first time, reported July 19, 2026.
- What happened to Paytm Payments Bank?
- The RBI fully cancelled Paytm Payments Bank's banking license on April 24, 2026, ending the entity after a January 2024 onboarding halt and March 2025 deposit ban. The bank was legally separate from parent One97 Communications, which retains its core payments business.
