The call

The company itself is gone, folded into FortiMail Workspace Security, so its fate now depends on whether Fortinet keeps investing in the line or lets Microsoft's free bundle quietly win the category.

Perception Point made software to catch phishing emails and fraud by watching how people interact with messages and using artificial intelligence to spot attacks. It is now owned by Fortinet, a large cybersecurity company, so you are not investing in a startup anymore. The real question is whether Fortinet will keep investing in this product or let it fade away, especially because Microsoft gives away similar tools for free with Office 365 and other companies like Abnormal are building cheaper AI-powered competitors. What matters most: watch whether Fortinet keeps Perception Point as a separate product line in late 2026, or quietly folds it into bundles where it gets less attention and money.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Project Perception (unreleased AI security tool) and native Defender for Office 365 AI filters. Free AI detection bundled into Microsoft 365 keeps closing the accuracy gap that once justified paying for a separate layer. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Defender for Office 365. Bundled free with Microsoft 365, structurally hard to dislodge, and getting better every quarter without a separate sales motion. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Fortinet's Security Fabric bundling and existing enterprise firewall relationships give the product distribution it never had alone.
What would change this call
Gartner's late-2026 Magic Quadrant for Email Security shows FortiMail Workspace Security's positioning. Whether Fortinet keeps investing in the acquired product or lets it slide toward niche/maintenance status.
Microsoft ships 'Project Perception' AI-security features (expected around July 2026). Whether Microsoft closes the accuracy gap that justified paying for standalone email security.
Fortinet's Q3/Q4 2026 earnings disclose segment performance for email/workspace security. Whether the acquired business is growing under Fortinet or stagnating as a bundled feature.
Key numbers
  • Acquired by Fortinet for ~$100M, Dec 2024 (2024-12-12)
  • Raised ~$48-75M total before exit (2021-04-21)
  • 2024 revenue estimated ~$15M by Latka (2024-11-29)
Named risks
  • Standalone brand and independent product identity already dissolved into Fortinet's Security Fabric. Severity: high
  • Core AI detection layer commoditizing via free Microsoft bundling and API-native rivals. Severity: high
  • FortiMail Workspace Security could be deprioritized to maintenance mode within a larger platform bundle. Severity: medium
  • Microsoft's unreleased Project Perception (expected ~July 2026) could deepen AI security pressure on the category. Severity: medium
  • Post-acquisition headcount and revenue tracking inconsistency signals loss of independent visibility. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Perception Point still an independent company?
No. Fortinet acquired Perception Point in December 2024 for a reported 100 million dollars, and the brand no longer exists independently. Its technology now operates as FortiMail Workspace Security inside Fortinet's Security Fabric, as confirmed by SecurityWeek on 2024-12-12.
Was the Fortinet acquisition a good outcome for Perception Point?
Calcalist called it a lukewarm exit on 2024-12-12, noting Perception Point sold for roughly 100 million dollars after raising an estimated 48 to 75 million dollars, a modest multiple for a company that had tripled ARR in both 2020 and 2021.
Could AI replace what Perception Point built?
Core detection like phishing and BEC classification is commoditizing fast, increasingly absorbed into free Microsoft Defender for Office 365 and API-native rivals like Abnormal and Sublime. The harder-to-replace piece is Perception Point's 24/7 human incident-response service, retained by Fortinet under the FortiMail brand as of June 2025.
Who is Perception Point's biggest competitor now?
As FortiMail Workspace Security under Fortinet, the biggest structural threat is Microsoft Defender for Office 365, bundled free into Microsoft 365 and never blocked from copying core detection features; API-native rivals Abnormal Security and Sublime Security also compete directly, per 2026 comparison sources.
Is joining Perception Point safe as a career move in 2026?
Joining means joining Fortinet, not a startup. Perception Point's standalone tracked headcount collapsed from roughly 126 to 134 employees pre-acquisition (2024) to 11 to 50 in post-acquisition directories dated 2026-04-16, reflecting absorption into Fortinet's org structure rather than layoffs.
Does Perception Point make money on its own?
No standalone revenue has been reported since the December 2024 Fortinet acquisition; the business is folded into Fortinet's FortiMail line. Pre-acquisition, a third-party estimator (Latka, 2024-11-29) put 2024 revenue around 15 million dollars, up from about 3.9 million in 2023.
