The call

Perplexity has revenue and a browser bet, but its main product does the same thing Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft already ship at far greater scale.

Perplexity is a search tool that reads web pages and gives you answers with sources listed, rather than a list of links. Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft have built the same thing into their own products that billions of people already use every day, making it hard for Perplexity to stand out on the core idea alone. The one thing that could change this: if Perplexity's browser (Comet) and its computer helper tool lock people into using Perplexity for work tasks before Google and OpenAI squeeze the independent search market, Perplexity survives; if not, it becomes a feature, not a company.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google now answers search queries directly inside Search at 1.5 to 2 billion users, shrinking the reason to leave for a separate answer engine. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google, OpenAI (ChatGPT Search), Microsoft Copilot. All three ship a cited-answer search product at 10 to 50 times Perplexity's user scale, using default placement in browsers, OS, and Office. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Federal GSA procurement, early enterprise contracts, and the Comet browser plus Computer agent trying to create switching costs beyond a single search query.

Questions people ask
Is Perplexity profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figure has been disclosed. Perplexity reported ARR exceeding $450M by March 2026 per the Financial Times, up from about $232M at end of 2025, but no net income or profit margin has been made public as of March 2026.

Could AI replace Perplexity's core product?
Perplexity's core answer engine runs on Meta's Llama models via its Sonar system, not a proprietary frontier model. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode reached an estimated 1.5 to 2 billion monthly users by March 2026, directly competing with the same synthesized search function.
Who is Perplexity's biggest competitor?
Google is the largest threat given AI Overviews and AI Mode reaching an estimated 1.5 to 2 billion monthly users as of March 2026, per aggregator tracking, while OpenAI's ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot also compete directly for the same synthesized search use case.
What is Perplexity's Comet browser and does it matter?
Comet is Perplexity's Chromium based browser, launched in paid beta in July 2025 at $200 a month for Max subscribers, then made free worldwide in October 2025. A Comet iOS app launched in March 2026, which the company says reached number 3 on the US App Store within 48 hours.
Did Perplexity get a government contract?
Yes. On November 19, 2025, the US General Services Administration signed a direct to government deal with Perplexity, making Perplexity Enterprise Pro for Government available to federal agencies at $0.25 per agency for 18 months, the first such direct AI deal per GSA's announcement.
