The call

Persona still processes hundreds of millions of verifications a year, but a code leak, a lost anchor customer, and Stripe's free bundling are testing whether its compliance edge holds.

Persona is a company that verifies who people are online for banks, apps, and crypto platforms. It has real advantages: it holds certifications that regulators require, and it works with major clients like OpenAI. However, the business is hard to defend. Stripe (the payments giant) is building a competing product and has an easier path to sell it. At the same time, AI tools are starting to approve users without needing documents, which cuts into Persona's volume. A leaked code database in early 2026 exposed customer information and caused Discord to leave, which damaged trust in a business where trust is everything. If more major customers leave in the next year or two, that would signal the defenses are cracking.

Why
01
AI pressure: SwitchID-style AI pre-screeners. AI pre-screening tools claim ~95% approval without document checks, squeezing the volume of verifications Persona gets paid per-check for. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Stripe Identity. Stripe already sits inside payments flows and can bundle identity checks for free or near-free, no conflict of interest, no extra sales cycle. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Regulatory certifications (FedRAMP, TEFCA, Kantara) and deep product integrations that are slow for customers to rip out.
What would change this call
Whether OpenAI, Roblox, Reddit, or LinkedIn drop Persona in 2026. Would show the Discord defection is spreading, not isolated.
Outcome of Persona's pending FedRAMP Moderate authorization audit. Pass hardens its government/enterprise trust story; fail damages it.
Whether Discord resumes using Persona after its H2 2026 age-verification rollout. A return would signal trust recovery after the leak.

Questions people ask
Is Persona profitable in 2026?
Persona has not published audited financials. Third-party estimates (Latka) put 2025 ARR at roughly $100M, down from an estimated $141.2M in 2024, as of July 2026. It raised $200M at a $2B valuation in April 2025, suggesting it still relies on venture funding rather than profits.
Who owns Persona, the identity verification company?
Persona (Persona Identities, Inc.) is privately held, founded in 2018 by Rick Song and Charles Yeh. It is venture-backed by Founders Fund, Ribbit Capital, BOND, Coatue, First Round Capital, Index Ventures and Chemistry, with a $2B valuation set in its April 30, 2025 Series D.
Could AI replace Persona's identity verification service?
Partly. Persona itself is automating case review with AI agents (launched May 2026) and Document AI, while rival tools like SwitchID claim ~95% signup approval via AI pre-screening without document checks, compressing Persona's verification volume rather than fully replacing its regulated compliance role.
Who is Persona's biggest competitor?
Stripe Identity is the named incumbent threat, given its payments distribution and no conflicting P&L, alongside Socure, Veriff, Jumio, Sumsub and Onfido/Entrust. As of mid-2026 none has a structural lock, making Persona's market a crowded, price-pressured contest rather than a moat.
Did Persona have a data breach?
Yes. On February 20, 2026, researcher 'Celeste'/vmfunc found a 53MB, 2,456-file Persona codebase exposed on a public FedRAMP-linked Google Cloud endpoint revealing 269 verification checks. A prior October 2025 incident exposed about 70,000 government IDs tied to Discord verification, attributed to vendor 5CA.
What is Persona's current valuation and funding?
Persona was valued at $2B after a $200M Series D on April 30, 2025, co-led by Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital. Total funding raised across Series A through D is roughly $417.5M as of the same date, per Pitchbook.
