The call

Physical Intelligence has real robots running its models today, but Google, Amazon, and Nvidia are all building the same brain with far more money and distribution.

Physical Intelligence makes software that teaches robots how to move and act in the real world, similar to how large AI models learn language. The company has smart founders and real progress, but Google DeepMind, Amazon, and others are already selling competing robot-control systems to customers, and they have far more money and resources. The one thing that could change everything is if Anthropic buys the company (rumors surfaced in mid-July 2026), which could give Physical Intelligence backing and reach it cannot build alone, or whether Google's Gemini Robotics system becomes so good and cheap that it wipes out the need for Physical Intelligence's approach.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google DeepMind Gemini Robotics. Google shipped a rival robot brain in April 2026 and is pushing to become the default control layer, squeezing PI's window to lock in OEMs. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Amazon (DeepFleet, Covariant IP) and Nvidia (compute layer). Amazon runs its own robot brain across 1M+ warehouse robots and owns Covariant's IP, while Nvidia controls the chips everyone needs. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Early technical lead and real deployments with Weave Robotics and Ultra, but no locked-in OEM base yet.
What would change this call
Whether Anthropic's rumored acquisition of Physical Intelligence is confirmed or denied. Confirmation would show PI needed an exit rather than independent scale; denial leaves the gamble open.
Whether Physical Intelligence closes the reported ~$1B round at ~$11B valuation. A closed round at that valuation would show investor confidence despite unblocked incumbent competition.
Whether a major robot OEM signs an exclusive multi-year deal with Gemini Robotics, Skild AI, or Physical Intelligence. Would reveal who is winning the 'default embedded brain' race PI needs to win.
Key numbers
  • $5.6B valuation after Series B (Nov 2025)
  • ~$1.07B total funding raised (Oct 2025)
  • Rumored $1B round at $11B+ valuation (Mar 2026)
Named risks
  • Unconfirmed Anthropic acquisition rumor could resolve independence or equity outcome abruptly. Severity: high
  • Thin moat: company ships research, not hardware or firm customer contracts, unlike Figure or Skild. Severity: high
  • No disclosed revenue, making the business fully dependent on continued venture funding. Severity: medium
  • Frontier labs (Google DeepMind, OpenAI) and better-funded Skild AI could commoditize the generalist robot-brain layer. Severity: high
  • Public output lull, no new blog post since April 2026 pi0.7 release as of July 20, 2026. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Physical Intelligence profitable in 2026?
Physical Intelligence has not publicly disclosed any revenue figure. As of July 20, 2026, analysts describe the company as having no disclosed revenue, funded instead by roughly $1.1B in venture capital including a $600M Series B at a $5.6B valuation in November 2025.
Who owns Physical Intelligence?
Physical Intelligence is privately held and VC-backed with no parent company. Investors include Jeff Bezos, OpenAI, Thrive Capital, Lux Capital, Index Ventures, Sequoia and Alphabet's CapitalG, which led the $600M Series B in November 2025 at a $5.6B post-money valuation.
Is Physical Intelligence being acquired by Anthropic?
Unconfirmed. A rumor that Anthropic is pursuing an acquisition of Physical Intelligence surfaced on the evening of July 17, 2026. As of July 20, 2026, neither company had confirmed or denied the reported deal.
Could AI from bigger labs replace Physical Intelligence's robot brains?
Yes, this is a live risk. Google DeepMind's Gemini Robotics shipped in April 2026 positioning itself as 'the CUDA of physical AI,' and Skild AI raised $1.4B at a $14 to 18 billion valuation chasing the same generalist robot-brain market as of March 2026, both better-capitalized than Physical Intelligence.
Who is Physical Intelligence's biggest competitor?
Skild AI, backed by SoftBank and Nvidia at a reported $14 to 18 billion valuation in early 2026, and Google DeepMind's Gemini Robotics, which launched a 10 to 15 team robotics accelerator around April 2026, are the closest rivals contesting Physical Intelligence's generalist robot-brain market.
How much funding has Physical Intelligence raised?
Physical Intelligence has raised roughly $1.07 to 1.1 billion total as of October 2025, including a $70M seed in March 2024, a $400M Series A in November 2024 at a ~$2.4B valuation, and a $600M Series B in November 2025 at a $5.6B valuation led by CapitalG.
