The call

Pixabay keeps growing its library and traffic even as Canva builds the AI tools that make that library less necessary.

Pixabay gives away free stock photos and images to drive traffic toward Canva's paid design platform. But Canva is now building its own AI image generators (Magic Media, Dream Lab, and Veo 3) that create custom pictures on the fly, making Pixabay's library of generic photos less necessary. The company is losing visitors every month, and it may get absorbed into Canva's other products or simply fade as the parent company focuses elsewhere, which would make Pixabay irrelevant even if Canva itself stays strong.

Why
01
AI pressure: Canva's own Magic Media, Dream Lab, and Canva AI 2.0 generative tools. Canva's in-editor AI image and video generation cuts the need to search Pixabay's library, and Pixabay traffic is down about 7% month over month. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Getty Images and Shutterstock (merging). A combined Getty/Shutterstock, closing through 2026, could push licensed and AI-training deals that Pixabay's free model can't match. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its 5.2 million free assets and 47 million monthly visits still feed Canva cheap top-of-funnel traffic and content supply.
What would change this call
Canva's 2027 S-1 discloses Pixabay's revenue contribution or classifies it as legacy. Would confirm whether Pixabay is a durable business line or a declining traffic funnel.
Pixabay team is merged into Pexels or Canva's Content/AI team, or headcount drops below current 39. Would show Canva deprioritizing Pixabay as a distinct product.
Pixabay monthly traffic (semrush) continues falling below the ~47M June 2026 level over the next two quarters. Would confirm accelerating decline in Pixabay's role as a customer acquisition funnel.

Questions people ask
Is Pixabay still independent or does Canva own it?
Pixabay is wholly owned by Canva, having been acquired in November 2018 with the deal publicly announced in May 2019 alongside the Pexels acquisition. It now operates as a Canva Germany GmbH brand, registered in Berlin, functioning as a free-traffic funnel into Canva's paid tools.
Could AI replace Pixabay's core function?
Yes, largely. Pixabay's core workflow, finding a generic stock image, is being directly replaced by text-to-image generation, including Canva's own Magic Media and Dream Lab tools (built on Leonardo AI, acquired August 2024). Pixabay traffic fell about 7% month-over-month to roughly 47.1 million visits in June 2026.
Who is Pixabay's biggest competitor?
Its closest peers are Pexels (also Canva-owned) and Unsplash (owned by Getty Images). Getty Images is merging with Shutterstock in a $3.7 billion deal that received unconditional US DOJ clearance in February 2026, and Getty also signed a licensing deal with OpenAI announced June 21, 2026.
Is Pixabay profitable or does it make money on its own?
Pixabay does not publish standalone financials and has no independent revenue model; it operates purely as a free content library and traffic funnel for parent Canva. Canva itself reported roughly 4 billion dollars in annual recurring revenue as of July 2026 (vendor-claimed).
Why would Canva build AI tools that compete with its own Pixabay library?
Canva is hedging: it operates Pixabay and Pexels as free stock funnels while also building Magic Media, Dream Lab, and Canva AI 2.0 (research preview launched April 2026) as in-house generative substitutes for the same stock-search use case, reducing Pixabay's relative importance within the company.
Does Pixabay allow AI-generated images and does that hurt its brand?
Yes, Pixabay has permitted AI-generated content uploads since April 2023, with mandatory disclosure and rules against mimicking real artists or people. It published AI Quality Guidelines in January 2026 and an AI Music contributor guide in July 2026 to manage growing AI content volume.
