The call

Plaid makes money and keeps growing, but banks charging for data and AI assistants replacing fintech front ends both nibble at the edges of its business.

Plaid is the main pipe that lets financial apps (like budgeting tools and lending platforms) pull your bank data. Right now it is hard to replace because it plugs into 12,000 banks and serves 8,000 fintech companies, but JPMorgan Chase and other big banks are starting to charge Plaid for access to that data, which squeezes profits. If Plaid can shift customers to newer products like payments and fraud detection (which make more money) before data access fees spread to more banks, it survives; if banks all start charging before that happens, the company's main business gets squeezed.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT Finances, Perplexity, Claude finance integrations. AI assistants could become the new front door for finance, cutting out fintech apps that plug into Plaid, not Plaid's pipes directly. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: JPMorgan Chase and other big banks charging for data access; Mastercard's Finicity. JPMorgan now charges Plaid for the same customer data it once handed over free, squeezing the margin on Plaid's core business. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Plaid sits inside 12,000+ banks and 8,000 fintech apps, so ripping it out means rebuilding thousands of live integrations.
What would change this call
A second or third money-center bank (e.g. Bank of America, Wells Fargo) imposes JPM-style fees on Plaid within 6 months. Would show bank fee contagion is spreading and squeezing connectivity margins faster.
CFPB issues revised Section 1033 rule (rumored by July 2026) letting banks set uncapped data-access fees. Would show regulation is tilting toward banks, threatening Plaid's core economics.
Stripe Financial Connections or Akoya publicly wins a marquee fintech logo away from Plaid. Would show a rival is actually taking share, not just competing on price.
Key numbers
  • $546M ARR, up 40% year over year (2025)
  • Newer products over 20% of ARR, fraud up 400% YoY (2025)
  • Valued at $8B in employee share sale (2026-02)
Named risks
  • Bank fee-for-data contagion spreading beyond JPMorgan could squeeze core connectivity margins further. Severity: high
  • CFPB Section 1033 rule outcome remains enjoined and uncertain, could let banks meter data access aggressively. Severity: high
  • AI assistants disintermediating standalone fintech app customers that form Plaid's traditional base. Severity: medium
  • Valuation still 40% below 2021 peak despite 2026 recovery to $8B. Severity: low
  • State-level open banking legislation (e.g. New York, March 2026) could create fragmented compliance burden. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Plaid profitable in 2025?
Yes. Plaid reached full-year adjusted EBITDA profitability in 2025 while hitting roughly $546M in ARR, up about 40% year over year from around $390M in 2024, according to Sacra research published in 2026.
Could AI assistants replace Plaid?
Unlikely so far. As of May 2026, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude all integrated Plaid as their financial data layer rather than bypassing it, using Plaid's transaction foundation model; AI firms made up about 20% of Plaid's new customers in 2025.
Who is Plaid's biggest competitor?
Stripe Financial Connections, Mastercard-owned Finicity, Envestnet Yodlee, MX Technologies, and bank-owned Akoya are the closest rivals; JPMorgan Chase itself became an economic pressure point after a September 2025 data-access fee deal.
Is Plaid going public soon?
Not confirmed. As of July 2026, Plaid held preliminary talks with banks about a possible US IPO but made no final decision; CFO Seun Sodipo said in March 2026 the company would 'pick our time' rather than rush to list.
Did Plaid lay off employees?
Plaid cut 260 employees, about 20% of staff, in December 2022 citing costs outpacing revenue growth. Headcount recovered to pre-layoff levels by mid-2025, reaching about 1,505 employees by December 2025 per Revelio Labs.
How much is Plaid worth in 2026?
Plaid completed an employee tender in February 2026 valuing the company at $8B, up 31% from its April 2025 'reset' round of $575M at a $6.1B valuation, but still about 40% below its April 2021 peak of $13.4B.
