The call

Prodigy still owns the classroom, but it hasn't shown its hand on AI while headcount shrinks and no fresh money has landed in five years.

Prodigy makes a math-learning game where students play an RPG and answer questions to level up, sold to schools and used by over 20 million students yearly. It is hard to copy because it has real relationships with 1 million teachers across 8,300 school districts who trust it and like that it protects student privacy, but Khan Academy just released a free AI tutor called Khanmigo that does something similar for no cost. The company cut its staff by more than one-third in one year and has not raised money in five years, which could mean it found a way to make money without spending much, or it could mean the company is in trouble and trying to survive.

Why
01
AI pressure: Khan Academy's Khanmigo. Khanmigo offers free AI tutoring to the same teachers and parents Prodigy serves, without needing a game wrapper to hold attention. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Minecraft Education) and Google (Classroom). Both own the classroom distribution rails Prodigy rents access through, but neither has built a rival math RPG yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep teacher trust, privacy compliance, and rostering ties across 8,300+ districts that took years to build.

Prodigy headcount trend in Q3/Q4 2026 filings or reports (Crustdata-tracked). Reveals whether the 38% YoY drop is lean profitability or distress.
New funding round, down-round, or TPG exit/secondary sale announcement. Clarifies whether investors still back Prodigy's standalone valuation after 5+ years unfunded.

Questions people ask
Is Prodigy Education profitable?
No audited financials are public. Prodigy raised $125M USD in a Series B from TPG Growth in January 2021 and has not raised new capital since, while third party tracker Crustdata reported headcount fell 38.3% YoY to 184 employees as of June 21, 2026, leaving profitability versus distress unclear.
Could AI replace Prodigy Education's math tutoring?
Prodigy's adaptive question engine is commoditizable by AI tutors. Khan Academy's free Khanmigo AI tutor already shipped and was featured in a February 19, 2026 teacher buying guide, while Prodigy Education had not shipped a customer-facing generative AI tutor as of mid 2026.
Who is Prodigy Education's biggest competitor?
Khan Academy is the most direct threat: both are free for teachers and students, but Khan Academy already shipped its Khanmigo AI tutor, cited in a February 19, 2026 teacher guide, while Prodigy has no equivalent AI product as of mid 2026.
Who owns Prodigy Education?
Prodigy Education is privately held, backed by TPG Growth, which led a $125M USD Series B in January 2021, and Canadian Business Growth Fund, which provided an earlier ~$15M round in 2019. No IPO or acquisition has occurred as of mid 2026.
How many students use Prodigy Education?
Prodigy states more than 20 million students per year and over 1 million teachers use its platform as of a July 20, 2026 press release, reaching about a quarter of all North American public school elementary students per an August 28, 2024 company release.
Has Prodigy Education launched an AI tutor to compete with Khanmigo?
No evidence found of Prodigy Education shipping a customer facing generative AI tutor as of mid 2026. Its public content instead discusses AI as an external trend, per a November 18, 2024 company blog post on teacher AI adoption.
