The call

A profitable niche prototyping tool sitting on top of a design-tool layer that Figma is steadily absorbing into its own product.

ProtoPie lets designers and product teams turn mockups into working prototypes to test interactions before building the real thing. The problem is that Figma, which already owns the design file most teams use, keeps adding prototyping features directly into its own tool, and AI assistants like Claude and v0 can now generate interactive prototypes from descriptions, making ProtoPie's premium version feel less necessary. The one thing that could change this is if ProtoPie's specialty tools for hardware and car dashboards become so valuable that teams choose it over a general solution, but that niche is still too small to fund the company's growth.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative UI/coding tools (v0, Lovable, Bolt, Claude Code, Cursor). These tools can already generate working click-through interfaces from a prompt, cutting into the manual wiring work ProtoPie sells. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Figma. Figma has shipped variables, conditionals, and AI-assisted prototyping inside the same canvas designers already live in since Config 2023. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A decade of deep workflow lock-in with enterprise design teams and a niche in hardware, IoT, and automotive HMI prototyping via ProtoPie Connect.
What would change this call
Figma ships a new native AI-assisted prototyping feature within the next two quarters. Would show Figma closing ProtoPie's remaining interaction-design gap.
ProtoPie's ARR growth by early 2027 compared to its ~$14.7M 2024 figure. Flat or declining ARR would show customer losses to Figma or AI coding tools.
Visible user churn or complaints after the July 24, 2026 Individual Plan sunset forces Pro-tier migration. Would show reliance on forced upgrades rather than organic growth.
Key numbers
  • $21M Series B raised, led by LB Investment and KDB (2025-01-21)
  • 85% of revenue comes from outside South Korea (2022-07-19)
  • Claims adoption by 50,000+ companies in 180+ countries (2025-01-21)
Named risks
  • Figma's native AI-assisted prototyping features erode ProtoPie's core mid-market differentiation. Severity: high
  • Generative AI vibe-coding tools compress the interaction-wiring workflow ProtoPie monetizes. Severity: high
  • July 24, 2026 Individual Plan sunset could cause visible user churn during forced Pro-tier migration. Severity: medium
  • Series B backing is Korea-concentrated with no global tier-1 VC, limiting international scaling capital. Severity: medium
  • Revenue and adoption figures remain vendor-claimed or unverified by any primary financial filing. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is ProtoPie profitable in 2026?
No profitability figures are disclosed. ProtoPie is private and VC-backed, having closed a $21M Series B on January 21, 2025, co-led by LB Investment and Korea Development Bank, earmarked partly for AI features and global expansion rather than showing declared profit.
Could AI replace ProtoPie's prototyping tool?
Generative AI code-gen tools (Cursor, v0, Lovable) and Figma's own AI prototyping features threaten ProtoPie's core 'wire up interactions without code' value prop. ProtoPie responded by launching its own ProtoPie AI (beta Feb 9, 2026, GA June 15, 2026) and MCP support (July 20, 2026) to stay relevant.
Who owns ProtoPie?
ProtoPie is made by Studio XID, a private South Korean company founded December 2014 by Tony Kim, Scotty Kim, and John Song. It remains independently owned and VC-backed, with its Series B ($21M) closing January 21, 2025, and no public valuation disclosed.
Is Figma ProtoPie's biggest competitor?
Yes. Figma is the dominant design platform and has shipped native advanced-prototyping features (variables, expressions, conditionals) since its Config 2023 event, directly eroding ProtoPie's traditional differentiation as a premium interaction-design layer, per ProtoPie's own January 2025 blog comparison.
What happened to ProtoPie's Individual pricing plan?
ProtoPie announced on May 21, 2026 that it would sunset its legacy Individual Plan effective July 24, 2026, migrating those users to the Pro tier to access AI features and Team Libraries, a change that could produce visible churn among lower-tier users.
Did ProtoPie raise a large funding round recently?
Yes. ProtoPie closed a $21M Series B on January 21, 2025, co-led by returning investor LB Investment and new backer Korea Development Bank, with several Korean financial institutions participating. No global tier-1 VC was involved and no valuation was disclosed.
