The call

Proximus holds its Belgian ground while its international CPaaS unit shrinks fast, leaving the group's fate split between a stable home market and a struggling side business.

Proximus runs Belgium's phone and internet networks and also handles text-message authentication for businesses worldwide. It's hard to replace because it owns the physical fiber lines and has government licenses, but two things are eating into its profits: other phone companies like Orange Belgium and cheaper brands are stealing customers at home, and the text-message authentication business is being replaced by authenticator apps that don't need text messages. The big question is whether the company can stop losing money in its international messaging division (currently shrinking fast) and whether customers will keep switching to Orange Belgium or discount brands over the next year.

Why
01
AI pressure: Authenticator apps and CPaaS rivals like Twilio replacing SMS one-time-passwords. Proximus Global's SMS-OTP and messaging business is being swapped for app-based authentication, not a model threat but a software one. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Orange Belgium and Telenet, plus discount flanker brands. Peer incumbents and their budget brands compete hard for the same fixed and mobile customers inside Belgium's small regulated market. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Majority Belgian State ownership, spectrum licenses, universal-service status and a fiber network reaching 2.6 million homes protect the core business.
What would change this call
Proximus Global revenue trajectory in Q1-Q3 2026 reports. Shows whether the CPaaS/BICS/Telesign decline is stabilizing or worsening past the 22% YoY drop.
Flanker-brand combined broadband share crossing 15% (from 13.4%). Would show the domestic fiber/telecom moat is being pierced, not just growth slowing.
Whether a second goodwill impairment on Proximus Global is booked in 2026 results. Would confirm structural decline in the international unit rather than a one-off writedown.

Questions people ask
Is Proximus profitable in 2025?
Yes but declining. Proximus posted FY2025 net income (group share) of €398 million, down 11.0% year over year, as of 2025-12-31, partly due to a €275 million goodwill impairment on its Proximus Global segment announced 2026-02-27.
Who owns Proximus?
Proximus is majority owned by the Belgian State through the holding company SFPIM, which held 53.51% of shares as of 2025-10-31. The remainder trades publicly on Euronext Brussels under ticker PROX, with roughly 42% free float.
Is Proximus laying off workers?
Yes. On 2026-02-27 Proximus announced plans to cut 1,200 jobs by 2030, about 15% of its workforce, tied explicitly to AI driven efficiency, with roughly 800 cuts expected via natural attrition and no compulsory redundancy.
Who is Proximus's biggest competitor?
Domestically it competes with Telenet and Orange Belgium. Orange overtook Proximus on mobile network coverage and speed rankings in 2025 per Test Achats data published 2026-03-03, while flanker discount brands grew combined share to 13.4% by 2026-07-16.
Could AI replace parts of Proximus's business?
Proximus itself links AI to 1,200 planned job cuts by 2030 (announced 2026-02-27) in areas like network operations and customer service. Its CPaaS/SMS one time password business is separately described by the company as in structural decline due to authenticator apps.
Is Proximus stock a safe investment right now?
Its stock fell over 16% on 2026-02-27 to a 52-week low near €6.95 after a strategic overhaul announcement, and market cap was roughly €1.97 billion as of 2026-07-24, far below its all-time high of €35.99.
