The call

Quipper still has DepEd's doors open in the Philippines, but its Indonesia headcount is emptying out while Ruangguru's AI tutors move in.

Quipper makes video lessons and homework-grading software for schools in Southeast Asia, mainly Philippines and Indonesia. It is getting easier to replace because AI can now do what Quipper does (explain lessons, grade work, show which topics students struggle with), and its main competitor Ruangguru already built AI tutors that do exactly that. The company has one real advantage: a deal with the Philippines Department of Education to run a free service for public schools, but that only covers students who cannot pay. The one thing that could matter is if Quipper's parent company Recruit Holdings decides to invest in a new AI product or merge Quipper with another edtech company, but after 18 months with no visible AI launch, that seems unlikely.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tutors like the one Ruangguru already ships. AI now explains videos, grades work, and analyzes items itself, the exact tasks Quipper built its product around. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Ruangguru. Ruangguru holds 65% of Indonesia's K-12 edtech users, has shipped AI tutors, and Quipper's Indonesia staff keeps shrinking. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A Philippine Department of Education partnership that gives Quipper free-tier access to public schools competitors lack.
What would change this call
Recruit Holdings Q1 FY2026 earnings call (Aug 2026) mentions or omits education segment. Silence would show Recruit is deprioritizing Quipper within its portfolio.
Quipper Indonesia headcount trend over next 6-12 months. Further decline would show accelerating retreat from its weakest market.
Any Quipper AI-tutor or adaptive-learning feature launch. Would show Quipper is responding to Ruangguru's product lead rather than ceding ground.

Questions people ask
Is Quipper profitable?
Quipper does not disclose standalone financials, and parent Recruit Holdings (TSE:6098) does not break out education revenue separately in its FY2024 annual report, so profitability cannot be verified as of 2026.
Who owns Quipper?
Quipper has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan's Recruit Holdings (TSE:6098) since April 2015, when Recruit acquired it for roughly $39 to 40 million, buying out prior investor Benesse.
Could AI replace Quipper's tutoring product?
Quipper's core offering, video lessons, automated grading and item analysis, overlaps directly with generative AI capabilities. Rival Ruangguru already shipped AI tutors in 2025 to 2026 while Quipper showed no comparable AI feature launch through mid-2026.
Who is Quipper's biggest competitor?
Ruangguru is Quipper's biggest threat, holding roughly 65% of Indonesia's K-12 edtech user base and serving over 40 million users across Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand as of 2025, per a March 2026 competitive analysis.
Has Quipper had layoffs?
Revelio Labs data (2026-06-29) shows Quipper's global headcount dropped 35.2% from 1,033 employees in 2023 to 669 in 2025, with the steepest cuts concentrated in its largest market, Indonesia.
What gives Quipper an edge in the Philippines?
Quipper partners with the Philippine Department of Education to provide free Quipper School access to public schools in grades 4 to 10, a distribution and regulatory relationship not easily replicated by a pure AI tool.
