The call

Rakuten's recovery rests on mobile debt falling below 5x while its cashback shopping funnel faces both Amazon Japan and new AI checkout agents.

Rakuten Group runs a shopping website, credit card, mobile phone service, and banking operations in Japan. It is hard to replace because it has millions of mobile customers, banking licenses, and a rewards system that keeps shoppers coming back, but Amazon Japan is just as big in shopping and AI-powered checkout systems from OpenAI and Google are starting to let customers buy things without visiting any particular store's website. The question is whether Rakuten can pay down its phone business debt and keep shoppers loyal to its rewards program as shopping increasingly happens through AI assistants instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI Instant Checkout, OpenAI-Amazon partnership, Visa-OpenAI, Google Universal Cart. AI checkout agents that buy directly for shoppers could bypass Rakuten's cashback links before Ichiba adapts. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Amazon Japan. Amazon Japan matches Rakuten in scale and the two have split the e-commerce market for two decades without resolution. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulated banking, card, and securities licenses plus a 45.9 million user ID system are costly for anyone to copy fast.

OpenAI-Amazon, Visa-OpenAI, or Google Universal Cart launch active checkout flows in Japan. Would show agentic commerce is bypassing Rakuten's Ichiba cashback funnel in its home market.
Rakuten Ichiba GMV or ad-revenue growth rate versus Amazon Japan in coming quarterly reports. Would reveal whether Rakuten's marketplace share is eroding against its main incumbent rival.
