The call

The marketplace already collapsed before Nokia bought it, and nothing since acquisition suggests anyone is trying to revive it.

RapidAPI built a marketplace where developers could find and use APIs made by other companies, kind of like an app store for software building blocks. It got replaced by bigger, free competitors like Postman and Microsoft Azure, and now AI tools let developers call APIs directly without needing a marketplace at all, so the whole idea of a paid directory became unnecessary. The only thing that could matter now is whether Nokia uses the technology to help phone companies (like Deutsche Telekom) sell their network services to software makers, but there is no sign that is happening.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic tools and MCP protocol (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot). Agents call APIs directly via MCP, skipping marketplace browsing entirely; AIFreaks already sells itself as the post-marketplace answer. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Postman, Azure API Management, AWS API Gateway. Postman's free public network and Azure's dominant management share already pulled developers away before Nokia even bought the assets. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Nokia's regulated carrier access (5G/4G APIs with Deutsche Telekom, Orange, BT) is the only piece with real value left.
What would change this call
Nokia's next 1-2 quarterly earnings mention (or omit) Network as Code / API monetization traction. Shows whether Nokia is investing in the acquired business or letting it fade.
rapidapi.com/Nokia API Hub is merged, deprecated, or quietly shut down within a year. Would confirm the legacy marketplace has no standalone future.
Postman or APIFreaks publicly cite migrated former RapidAPI customers or APIs. Would show direct customer transfer away from the legacy marketplace.

Named risks
  • Legacy public marketplace could be further deprioritized, merged, or shut down inside Nokia. Severity: high
  • AI agents and MCP protocols let developers bypass marketplace UIs entirely for direct API calls. Severity: high
  • No documented reinvestment in core marketplace product since Nov 2024 acquisition (as of Jan 2026). Severity: medium
  • Conflicting user/API figures (marketing site vs TechCrunch reporting) create credibility and measurement risk. Severity: medium
  • 2023 layoffs described in press as 'rushed and messy,' potential latent labor disputes. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is RapidAPI still an independent company in 2026?
No. RapidAPI (rebranded Rapid) was acquired by Nokia in November 2024, with its technology and team folded into Nokia's Network as Code platform. TechCrunch reported active users had fallen to 'the thousands' and APIs to 'the hundreds' by the time of the deal, down from a 2022 peak of 4 million developers.
Why did RapidAPI's valuation collapse before Nokia bought it?
RapidAPI was valued at $1 billion in March 2022 after raising $150M, but two 2023 layoff rounds cut headcount 82% (230 to 42 employees) and usage shrank sharply. By the November 2024 Nokia acquisition, reports speculated the price was as low as $100 million.
Did RapidAPI have mass layoffs?
Yes. In April-May 2023, RapidAPI conducted two layoff rounds cutting staff by a cumulative 82%, from a peak of about 230 employees down to roughly 42, according to TechCrunch reporting dated April 25 and May 5, 2023.
Who owns RapidAPI now?
Nokia, the Helsinki-listed telecom equipment company, acquired RapidAPI's technology and team in November 2024 (announced 2024-11-13) and integrated it into Nokia's Network as Code platform, later rebranding the site toward 'Nokia API Hub.'
Could AI agents replace RapidAPI's marketplace?
Largely yes for the core discovery function. Agentic AI tools and MCP protocols now let developers or agents call APIs directly without browsing a marketplace UI. Rival APIFreaks explicitly markets itself as 'post-marketplace, agent-ready' as of May 2026, targeting exactly this shift.
Is RapidAPI's biggest competitor Postman?
Postman is the dominant API tooling incumbent with 30M+ registered users as of 2024, versus RapidAPI's collapse to 'thousands' of active users by November 2024. Postman's free Public API Network directly undercuts RapidAPI's paid marketplace model.
