The call

Rasa holds real regulated-enterprise deployments while Microsoft and a newly consolidated NiCE-Cognigy close in on the same ground from both ends.

Rasa sells software that lets big companies build AI chatbots they control completely, without the AI making things up. The company started with a real advantage: it ran on a company's own computers (not the cloud) and let people write rules to keep the AI honest, which mattered for banks and hospitals with strict rules. But now Microsoft, Amazon, and other huge cloud companies are adding the same keep-it-honest features to their own platforms, and they can offer it cheaper and tied to everything else a company already buys from them. The one thing that could save Rasa is if its biggest customers (like Deutsche Telekom and Swisscom) stay loyal and keep paying more, but that is far from certain.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI Agent SDK, Anthropic tool-use with MCP, and native frontier-lab agent orchestration. Frontier labs now ship the deterministic control layer Rasa built its business on, shrinking the exact problem it solves. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Copilot Studio Agent Framework and NiCE-owned Cognigy. Copilot Studio's sovereign/self-hosted push (GA 2026) and NiCE's $955M Cognigy buy both target Rasa's regulated-enterprise niche directly. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep self-hosted, air-gapped deployments at regulated clients like Deutsche Telekom, HCA Healthcare, and Swisscom are costly to rip out.
What would change this call
Any of Rasa's named anchor logos (Deutsche Telekom, Swisscom, N26, HCA Healthcare, Adobe) publicly switches to Copilot Studio or Cognigy within 12 months. Would show Rasa's regulated/self-hosted lock-in is failing to hold against hyperscaler and consolidator offers.
Whether Rasa announces a confirmed Series D or files public funding docs within 12 months. Would show investors still believe Rasa can scale independently past ~$20M ARR.
Next Forrester Wave or Gartner report cycle places Rasa as Leader versus dropping a tier. Would show whether analyst perception of Rasa's durability is rising or eroding versus Cognigy/Copilot Studio.
Key numbers
  • Raised $30M Series C (2024-02-14)
  • Rival Cognigy sold to NiCE for $955M (2025-09-08)
  • Open-source downloads surpass 50 million (2024-02-14)
Named risks
  • Core deterministic-control technology commoditized by hyperscaler agent frameworks (Copilot Studio GA 2026). Severity: high
  • No confirmed new funding round since Feb 2024 Series C while better-funded rivals consolidate. Severity: medium
  • Sector consolidation (NiCE-Cognigy, SoundHound-Amelia) leaves Rasa as smaller independent player. Severity: high
  • Unexplained CEO transition from Weidauer to Gordon may signal pivot or sale process. Severity: medium
  • Sector-wide AI-driven layoffs (1.2M+ in 2025) may lengthen enterprise sales cycles. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Rasa profitable in 2026?
Rasa has not disclosed profitability. It self-reported that ARR 'roughly doubled' in 2023 versus 2022 ahead of its $30M Series C raise on Feb 14, 2024, but no profit figures have been published since.
Who owns Rasa?
Rasa is privately held and venture-backed, not publicly traded. Investors include Accel, a16z, PayPal Ventures, StepStone Group, and Basis Set Ventures, following rounds through its Series C of $30M closed February 14, 2024.
Could AI replace Rasa's core product?
Rasa's deterministic 'keep the LLM on-rails' function is being absorbed into rival platforms: Microsoft's Copilot Studio Agent Framework reached general availability in 2026 with multi-agent orchestration and MCP/A2A support, narrowing Rasa's differentiation.
Who is Rasa's biggest competitor?
NiCE's Cognigy, acquired for $955M in a deal that closed September 8, 2025, is Rasa's closest rival, now offering self-hosted multi-LLM orchestration across OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Bedrock, matching Rasa's regulated-deployment pitch.
Has Rasa raised a Series D?
No Series D has been confirmed by press as of mid-2026. Rasa's last verified round was a $30M Series C closed February 14, 2024, co-led by StepStone Group and PayPal Ventures; a later funding event referenced by one tracker remains unverified.
What is Rasa's flagship technology called?
Rasa's flagship architecture is CALM (Conversational AI with Language Models), which launched in beta on October 23, 2023, separating LLM-based language understanding from deterministic, code-defined business logic to reduce hallucinations.
