Rec Room
Social/VR gaming platform for user-made rooms and games, now fully shut down.
Rec Room raised nearly $300 million, hit a $3.5 billion valuation, and still closed for good in June 2026 once Roblox's scale and its own AI costs outran its revenue.
Rec Room was a platform where players created and played games together in virtual spaces, competing directly with Roblox. It was not hard to copy because Roblox already did the same thing at much larger scale, and when Rec Room tried to use AI to cut costs and moderate content, the AI actually made each user less profitable instead of more. The company raised $294 million and had 150 million lifetime players, but the math never worked: it kept less than 30 cents from every dollar of user-created game revenue while Roblox kept 70 cents, so growth only made losses worse. What could have changed things was either a way to lock players in that competitors could not replicate, or regulators protecting its space somehow, or becoming a record-keeper that other platforms depended on, but none of that happened.
Fan-run servers using exported Rec Room assets grow large enough to draw legal action. Would indicate lingering IP value and possible legal exposure from the shutdown.
Sequoia, Coatue, Index, or Madrona disclose write-off details tied to Rec Room in fund reports. Confirms the scale of investor losses from the $3.5B peak valuation.
- Shut down June 1, 2026
- $294M total raised, all lost
- Peaked at $3.5B valuation, 2021
- Company is fully dissolved; no going-concern, equity, or job opportunity exists as of June 1, 2026.
- Structural unit economics (only $0.30 retained per $1 UGC revenue) made profitability unreachable.
- Total loss for all equity investors including Sequoia, Coatue, Index Ventures, Madrona.
- Potential IP/legal disputes if fan-run servers using exported Rec Room assets scale up.
- Sector-wide bellwether risk: Rec Room's failure alongside Horizon Worlds questions VR-first social platform viability.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox | losing to | Roblox scale (~85.3M DAU, Feb 2025) dwarfed Rec Room, which fully shut down June 1, 2026 |
| VRChat | losing to | VRChat hit 156,700 peak concurrents Feb 15, 2026 and remained operating after Rec Room folded June 1, 2026 |
| Meta Horizon Worlds | contesting | Both platforms wound down around the same period; Horizon moved to mobile-first/maintenance mode March 2026 |
| Snap Inc / Specs Inc | losing to | Snap acquired select Rec Room assets and hired staff including CEO Nick Fajt by June 1, 2026 |
- Is Rec Room still operating in 2026?
- No. Rec Room fully shut down at noon Pacific on June 1, 2026, and its apps were delisted from Steam, PlayStation Store, App Store, Google Play and Meta Quest Store by June 2, 2026, per GeekWire and Wikipedia reporting.
- Why did Rec Room, a $3.5B unicorn, fail?
- Rec Room's own August 2025 blog post said it retained only $0.30 per $1 of user-generated-content revenue versus $0.70 per $1 of first-party content, a margin gap that worsened as UGC grew, and the company said it could not reach sustainable profitability before shutting down June 1, 2026.
- Did Roblox beat Rec Room?
- Rec Room never overtook Roblox; Roblox's scale (reportedly ~85.3M daily active users as of February 2025) dwarfed Rec Room, which shut down entirely on June 1, 2026 after ~150 million lifetime players failed to translate into a profitable business.
- What happened to Rec Room employees and leadership?
- Rec Room cut headcount from about 372 in March 2025 (16% layoff) to roughly 100 after an August 2025 WARN filing affecting 141 people, then shut down entirely June 1, 2026; Snap Inc. hired a portion of staff, including CEO Nick Fajt, into its Specs Inc. AR glasses unit.
- Can you still join or invest in Rec Room?
- No. Rec Room Inc. is defunct as of June 1, 2026, with no operating entity, apps, or equity remaining; Snap Inc. acquired select assets and hired some staff into Specs Inc., but this was an asset and talent deal, not a continuation of Rec Room as a company.
- Did AI save or hurt Rec Room's business?
- Rec Room deployed Maker AI, Roomie, and AIRS moderation through 2025, but a post-mortem report (GeekWire, cited via Quasa, April 23, 2026) said per-user AI costs exceeded subscription revenue generated, worsening rather than solving the company's margin problem before its June 1, 2026 shutdown.
