The call

Owned by a payments giant with data no LLM can scrape, but Google's Mandiant is shipping the same AI features and the next Gartner ranking will show who is actually winning.

Recorded Future helps companies find and understand cyber threats by collecting and organizing information from across the internet and its customers' networks. The company built a huge advantage over ten years by gathering so much threat data and connecting it to security tools that customers already use, plus now it has access to Mastercard's payment fraud information that competitors cannot easily get. However, Google's Gemini AI can now do many of the same tasks (like reading threat reports and finding dangerous patterns), and cheaper AI tools from other companies are starting to offer similar capabilities, so the main question is whether Recorded Future's data and customer relationships will stay valuable enough to justify its price when AI can do the work faster and cheaper.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google/Mandiant's Gemini-powered threat intel features. Gemini now does natural-language threat queries and auto-writes reports, the exact grunt work Recorded Future analysts used to bill for. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google/Mandiant. Mandiant ships direct feature parity backed by Google's cloud distribution and Gemini, competing head to head in the same Gartner category. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A decade of proprietary threat data plus Mastercard's payment fraud feed, wired into over 100 security tools customers already run.
What would change this call
2027 Gartner Cyberthreat Intelligence MQ places Mandiant ahead of or level with Recorded Future. Would show Google closing or erasing Recorded Future's leadership gap.
Mastercard Q3/Q4 2026 earnings disclose Security Solutions segment performance tied to Recorded Future. Would reveal whether the acquired unit is thriving or underperforming inside Mastercard.
Renewal cohort data after the 2026 Core/Professional/Elite pricing overhaul shows churn or downgrade rates. Would show whether the new pricing model is causing customer attrition.

  • 2026 pricing overhaul to unlimited-user tiers may cause renewal friction or churn at next cohort. Severity: medium
  • Deeper Mastercard integration could erode RF's 'distinct entity' positioning and autonomy. Severity: medium
  • No standalone financial disclosure since acquisition limits external performance visibility. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Who owns Recorded Future now?
Mastercard owns Recorded Future outright. Mastercard announced the $2.65 billion acquisition from Insight Partners on September 12, 2024, and the deal closed December 19, 2024. Recorded Future now operates as a distinct branded entity inside Mastercard's Security Solutions division.
Is Recorded Future profitable?
Unknown. As a wholly owned Mastercard subsidiary since December 2024, Recorded Future no longer files independent financials, and Mastercard has not broken out standalone revenue or profit figures for the unit in public disclosures as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Recorded Future's threat intelligence services?
Partially exposed. Indicator collection and report synthesis are commoditizable by LLMs, and Google/Mandiant shipped competing Gemini-powered natural-language query and report features by April 2026. Recorded Future responded by taking its own 'Recorded Future AI' (Pathfinder) out of beta in July 2026.
Who is Recorded Future's biggest competitor?
Google/Mandiant is the most direct threat, having shipped Gemini-powered natural-language query and APT report summarization within Mandiant Advantage by April 2026, matching Recorded Future's own AI features feature-for-feature.
Did Recorded Future change its pricing in 2026?
Yes. On April 13, 2026, Recorded Future launched a new model, 'Four Solutions. Three Packages. One Intelligence Foundation,' with Core, Professional, and Elite tiers offering unlimited users and integrations, replacing prior seat-based pricing.
How big is Recorded Future's customer base?
Recorded Future states it serves over 1,900 businesses and government organizations across 75 to 80 countries, a figure repeated consistently in company and Mastercard press materials from September 2024 through 2026.
