The call

Jio holds the largest subscriber base and network footprint in India, with Airtel gaining ground on ARPU and adds as the IPO nears.

Reliance Jio is India's largest phone and internet provider, serving over half a billion people. It would be extremely difficult for a rival phone company or new AI startup to replace it soon because Jio owns expensive licenses from the government, owns or controls most of the towers and fiber cables that carry signals, and makes huge profits that let it invest more money than competitors can match. The one thing that could change this is if Airtel, its main rival, keeps winning customers by charging higher prices that people are willing to pay, or if Reliance struggles to actually build and sell artificial intelligence services from its new data centers.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as a capex and data-center bet inside Jio, not as an outside force eating its connectivity business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Bharti Airtel. Airtel posted higher ARPU (₹257 vs Jio's ₹215.6) and beat Jio on monthly net adds in late 2025 data. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Spectrum holdings, 360k+ towers, and 1M+ km of fiber that no new entrant can replicate quickly or cheaply.
What would change this call
TRAI monthly subscriber reports show Airtel net-adds exceeding Jio's for four+ consecutive months. Would confirm Airtel is structurally overtaking Jio's growth, not just a blip.
Jio's ARPU gap versus Airtel's Rs257 widens past Rs80 in quarterly results. Would show Jio losing pricing power and premium subscriber mix to Airtel.
Jio Platforms IPO priced or trades below $100B valuation post-listing (expected Aug-Oct 2026). Would signal investor doubt about Jio's growth story and competitive position.

Yes. Jio Platforms reported consolidated FY26 net profit of about ₹30,064 crore on revenue from operations of roughly ₹1.47 lakh crore for the year ended March 31, 2026, per its June 2026 IPO DRHP filing.
Who owns Reliance Jio?
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) held about 66.43% of Jio Platforms pre-IPO as of June 20, 2026. Meta holds roughly 9.98% via Jaadhu Holdings and Google holds about 7.73%, stakes acquired in Jio's 2020 fundraising round.
Is Reliance Jio going public?

No. Jio's core revenue comes from physical network infrastructure, 360,382+ towers and over 1 million route-km of fiber reaching 99%+ of India's population as of March 2026, assets AI software cannot substitute; AI is being bundled as an add-on product, not a replacement threat.
