The call

RIDI has real reach and its own AI tools but stays unprofitable after 16 years, with a pre-IPO round unconfirmed for over two years.

RIDI runs Korea's largest e-book platform and owns Manta, a webtoon app with 19 million downloads worldwide, along with exclusive deals to publish certain comics and stories. The company is hard to replace because it owns real readers and real content deals, but bigger competitors like Naver and Kakao have deeper pockets and are copying RIDI's moves just as fast, including using AI to translate comics cheaply, which was supposed to be RIDI's advantage. The one thing that matters most is whether RIDI can finally stop losing money and whether it can actually raise the hundreds of millions of dollars it tried to get in late 2023, because if that funding fell through and subscribers keep leaving over AI translation problems, the company's future gets much darker.

Why
01
AI pressure: WEBTOON Entertainment's AI translation tool. WEBTOON shipped its own AI translation in March 2026, four months after RIDI's Prodifi, closing RIDI's localization cost edge. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Naver/WEBTOON Entertainment (Nasdaq: WBTN). A larger, publicly listed rival now matches RIDI's AI tools while outspending it on marketing and content deals. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Exclusive IP licenses, Korea's biggest e-book library, and Manta's 19M-download global base give RIDI assets rivals still have to build.
What would change this call
RIDI's FY2025 financial results, overdue as of mid-2026, are released showing operating profit or loss. Shows whether the 16-year unprofitability streak ended or the loss merely narrowed again.
RIDI confirms closing, or continues staying silent on, the Dec 2023 $150 to $200M pre-IPO round. Confirmation would ease liquidity doubts; continued silence past 3 years signals deal or valuation stress.
Manta's subscriber and cancellation trends from Nov 2025 through Nov 2026 following the AI localization backlash. Sustained decline would show real customer loss tied to the AI translation dispute rather than a contained blip.

Questions people ask
Is RIDI profitable in 2026?
RIDI has not been profitable. FY2024 operating loss was KRW12.9B (about $8.8M) on record revenue of KRW235.4B (about $161M), a 56.2% narrower loss than 2023, per an April 2025 company disclosure. No confirmed FY2025 results had surfaced by July 2026.
Who owns RIDI?
RIDI is privately held, founded by CEO Kisik Bae in March 2008. In February 2022, GIC led a KRW120B (about $99-100M) round with Korea Development Bank, NVESTOR, and Atinum Investment, valuing RIDI at KRW1.6T (about $1.3B) as Korea's first content-platform unicorn.
Could AI replace RIDI's translators?
RIDI's own subsidiary Prodifi launched an AI localization tool in March 2025 claiming up to 90% reduction in localization time and cost. But by November 2025 readers were documented cancelling Manta subscriptions over AI-generated translations, showing real backlash risk to the strategy.
Who is RIDI's biggest competitor?
Nasdaq-listed WEBTOON Entertainment (backed by Naver) is RIDI's largest rival. In March 2026 it launched its own AI translation tool in beta covering six languages, four months after RIDI's Prodifi tool, matching RIDI's cost edge at far greater scale and capital.
Is RIDI going to IPO?
RIDI reportedly sought a pre-IPO funding round of $150-200M with a global investment bank in December 2023, but no confirmed close or IPO filing had been reported as of July 2026, more than two and a half years later.
How big is Manta, RIDI's global webtoon app?
Manta had reached 19 million cumulative downloads across 175 countries as of April 2026, up from 15 million in mid-2024 and 10 million in March 2023, according to RIDI's own April 2026 product announcement.
