The call

Riiid built adaptive test-prep before generic AI tutors existed, and has said little publicly since early 2024 while those tutors caught up.

Riiid built software that uses artificial intelligence to teach students and predict test scores by personalizing practice problems. The problem is that general AI tools like ChatGPT, Duolingo Max, and Khan Academy's new GPT-4 tutor now do exactly what Riiid does, and they do it faster and cheaper because they start with more powerful AI. Riiid has not announced any new money or new products in over a year and a half, which suggests the company may be running out of cash or losing momentum. The one thing that could change this is if Riiid shipped a product so specialized or so much better than the free AI alternatives that schools or students would pay for it instead, but there is no public sign that has happened.

Why
01
AI pressure: Duolingo Max and Khan Academy Khanmigo (both GPT-4 based). Both already offer personalized practice, explanations, and score prediction, the same workflow Riiid built its name on. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Pearson, Kaplan, The Princeton Review. None are blocked from bolting AI tutoring onto their existing test-prep brands and distribution. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A large historical bank of student response data (EdNet) and existing exam-prep partnerships give it some tuning edge over generic chatbots.
What would change this call
Riiid announces new funding round or acquisition by 2027. Would show the company still has capital access rather than stalling out.
Riiid ships an LLM-native flagship product with disclosed enterprise or school adoption. Would show it can still compete against GPT-4-based tutors like Khanmigo.
Riiid discloses current revenue, headcount, or user retention figures publicly. Would break the 30-month silence and show whether the business is still operating at scale.

Questions people ask
Is Riiid still raising funding or has it stalled?
Riiid's last confirmed funding was a $175M Series E from SoftBank Vision Fund 2 in May 2021. No new funding round, IPO, or acquisition has been publicly reported since, and no Riiid-specific news of any kind has surfaced after February 2024 through mid 2026.
Could AI chatbots like ChatGPT replace Riiid's test-prep product?
Riiid's core offering is adaptive AI tutoring and score prediction for exams like TOEIC and SAT, the same workflow now natively replicated by Duolingo Max (GPT-4, 2023) and Khan Academy's Khanmigo (GPT-4, 2023), both shipped free or low-cost to mass audiences.
Who are Riiid's biggest competitors?
Riiid competes with Khan Academy (Khanmigo, GPT-4 tutor shipped 2023), Duolingo Max, Carnegie Learning's LiveHint AI (2024), and traditional test-prep incumbents Pearson, Kaplan, and The Princeton Review, all of which have shipped or partnered on comparable AI tutoring tools.
What products has Riiid launched recently?
Riiid launched R.test, an AI-powered SAT prep platform, in April 2023, followed by Quizium, a video-to-quiz tool, in November 2023, and acquired ESL platform Qualson (Real Class) in December 2023. No product launches have been publicly confirmed since February 2024.
Does Riiid own unique data that protects it from AI competitors?
Riiid trained its models on the EdNet dataset of over 100 million student interactions, but the dataset was open-sourced and is publicly accessible to competitors, meaning it offers no exclusive lock-in against rival AI tutoring products.
Is Riiid profitable or growing revenue in 2026?
No audited revenue figures for 2024 through 2026 have been publicly disclosed by Riiid. The company claimed over 200 percent annual sales growth back in 2020, but no independently verified financial data exists for the current period as of July 2026.
