The call

Ross is growing faster than at any point in years, with department stores unable to copy its model and Amazon unable to serve it profitably.

Ross Stores buys excess inventory from brands and department stores at steep discounts, then sells it cheaply through a dense network of physical stores. Most competitors cannot copy this: department stores like Macy's would undercut their own full-price sales, and Amazon's shipping costs make it uneconomical. TJX (which runs T.J. Maxx and Marshalls) is a similar player but both can coexist since there is plenty of excess inventory to go around. The biggest long-term risk is if artificial intelligence helps brands and retailers predict demand so accurately that they produce less excess stock, which would shrink the supply of discounted goods Ross depends on; however, this threat is years away and speculative.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. If brands use AI to manage inventory tighter, the excess stock Ross buys cheap could shrink over years, not now. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: TJX Companies (T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods). TJX runs the same playbook at similar scale but both keep growing side by side instead of taking share from each other. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Deep vendor relationships for closeout buys, dense store network, and no e-commerce cost load that rivals can't easily match.
