The call

RSM's audit liability shield keeps the firm safe from AI and the Big Four, but the real test is whether its transatlantic merger and thinning junior ranks hold together through 2026 and 2027.

RSM is a partnership of about 49,000 people worldwide that signs off on company financial statements and handles taxes for mid-sized businesses. The law requires a real, licensed human firm to sign those audits, which locks out the Big Four firms (they're too expensive to compete here) and AI tools (they cannot legally sign). But AI is already automating the routine work that junior auditors used to do, which means fewer entry-level jobs and lower profits per person. The real test is whether RSM can stay independent and integrate its U.S., UK, Canada, Ireland, India, and El Salvador operations smoothly while keeping up with tech rivals like BDO, or whether it eventually takes outside investment and stops operating as a pure partnership.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI tools like Luca, Blue J and Additive used inside audit and tax work. AI automates junior prep and research work, squeezing billable hours and thinning the entry-level promotion pipeline, not replacing the firm itself. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) and mid-tier rivals BDO, Grant Thornton, Crowe. Big Four cost structures do not fit mid-market clients, so they stay above RSM rather than below it; BDO and Grant Thornton compete sideways for the same accounts. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Statutory audit sign-off legally requires a licensed, liable human firm, so regulators keep AI and non-firm players out of the core work.
What would change this call
Partner exits or restated revenue reports during the 2026 US-UK-Canada-Ireland transatlantic integration. Would show the merger is straining rather than strengthening the network.
RSM announcing (or failing to announce) a major AI platform partnership akin to BDO's Microsoft deal in 2026. Shows whether RSM closes or widens the AI-platform gap with BDO.
Any RSM firm accepting outside private equity capital in 2026-27. Would signal partnership economics reset despite leadership's PE-avoidance stance.
Key numbers

  • 6th-largest global accounting network by revenue (2025-06-17)
  • MENA revenue up 38% YoY, doubled since 2021 (2025-02-04)
Named risks
  • AI automation of junior billable audit/tax prep work compresses margins and narrows entry-level promotion pyramid. Severity: high
  • Transatlantic US-UK-Canada-Ireland-India-El Salvador integration (Jan 2026) could trigger partner-pay disputes or exits. Severity: medium
  • Revenue reporting discontinuity after US/Canada alliance divestiture makes growth figures hard to compare year over year. Severity: low
  • Leadership has not ruled out future private equity capital, which could reset partner economics and independence stance. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is RSM International profitable and growing in 2026?
RSM reported FY2025 global revenue of $7.7bn, up 4% on a restated basis excluding divested US/Canada alliance firms, per its own March 5, 2026 announcement. The prior year's unrestated figure was $10bn (+6%) for calendar 2024, so growth continues but reporting basis changed.
Could AI replace auditors at RSM International?
No. Statutory audit sign-off legally requires a licensed, liable human firm, a regulatory floor AI cannot cross. RSM's own June 9, 2025 announcement frames its $1bn AI investment (Luca, Additive, Blue J) as automating prep work, not replacing the firm's liability-bearing role.
Who owns RSM International?
RSM is a partner-owned network of independent firms; RSM International Limited is registered in England and Wales with brand/IP held by RSM International Association in Zug, Switzerland. Leadership has publicly rejected outside private equity capital as of October 29, 2025, positioning independence as a differentiator.
Is RSM merging with another accounting firm?
Yes. On October 23, 2025, RSM US and RSM UK formally signed a transatlantic partnership effective January 1, 2026, uniting roughly 23,000 professionals across the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, India and El Salvador under new leadership, short of a full legal merger.
Who is RSM International's biggest competitor?
BDO is RSM's closest rival, reporting $11bn revenue for its fiscal year ended September 2025 (+4% YoY) and about 94,900 people, per BDO's own December 10, 2025 results, versus RSM's $7.7bn (2025, restated) or $10bn (2024, unrestated).
Will RSM International take private equity funding?
RSM has publicly rejected PE capital, framing its October 2025 transatlantic partnership as an alternative to it. However, per Irish Times reporting on October 23, 2025, leadership did not rule out taking outside capital in the future.
